Lesson 02
Planetary archetypes and signs
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
Planets and signs are living qualities, not stickers for cards. Learn them as archetypes you can think with. Then, and only then, let them meet tarot.
Planets as kinds of action
A planet, in this old language, is a kind of action in a life. You do not need the sky in front of you to use the archetype. You need the quality in your mouth in plain English.
The Sun: identity, vitality, what is lit, the self that wants to be seen. Light: warmth, a centre. Shadow: glare, making everything about the shine.
The Moon: feeling, reflection, cycles, the hidden, the body clock. Light: true inner weather. Shadow: fog, mood as the only map.
Mercury: mind, speech, hands, messages, the movement of information. Light: clear contact. Shadow: spin, chatter, cleverness without heart.
Venus: value, relating, beauty, what you draw toward and call worthy. Light: real connection and taste. Shadow: people-pleasing, sugar, buying the appearance of love.
Mars: drive, heat, conflict, the will to act. Light: courage, a clean no and a clean go. Shadow: war in the kitchen, heat that only knows how to cut.
Jupiter: expansion, meaning, faith, more. Light: generosity, a bigger view. Shadow: excess, inflating a story so you do not have to feel a small true thing.
Saturn: limit, time, structure, consequence, the grown-up. Light: backbone, a container that lasts. Shadow: punishment, delay as identity, walls with no door.
The slower ones, used lightly
Some readers also use Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Uranus: disruption, awakening, the sudden. Neptune: dissolve, dream, ideal, fog. Pluto: deep change, power, what must transform.
They are not required for this course. If they are already a living language for you, use them the same way: as a quality, when they actually match the card. If they are not, skip them. Skipping is allowed. Guessing in Latin is not.
Signs as styles
A sign is a style that an action can wear. Twelve of them. Four elements. Three modes of moving. You will get elements and modalities next. Here I want the flavour in ordinary words, not a horoscope column.
Aries: first fire, the ram, start, head-on. Taurus: earth that stays, the bull, value, the body that will not be rushed. Gemini: air that asks and tells, the twins, two, language. Cancer: water that protects, the crab, home, mood as shelter.
Leo: fire that shines, the lion, heart, performance, pride. Virgo: earth that sorts, the harvest-keeper, craft, discernment. Libra: air that balances, the scales, relating, the wish for fair. Scorpio: water that goes deep, the sting, bond, what is hidden under the bond.
Sagittarius: fire that aims far, the archer, meaning, more room. Capricorn: earth that climbs, the goat, time, structure, the long game. Aquarius: air that invents, the water-bearer, the future, the group, the outsider. Pisces: water that dissolves, two fish, dream, mercy, the blur between you and the rest.
Not a personality quiz
If a querent is a Taurus, that does not mean The Hierophant is about them. If a card is linked with Mercury, that does not mean the person should check their emails. Signs and planets are thinking tools for the energy on the table.
You may notice a personal association. Fine. Name it as yours. Then go back to the card.
Mars and The Tower
A common link for The Tower is Mars: heat, strike, the thing that will not stay standing. Useful if it helps you feel the suddenness and the necessary break. Not useful if you recite Mars in Aries and stop looking at the lightning, the crown, the people in the air, the question.
The planet is a flavour. The card is still a picture. The picture wins.

Activity
One quality you already know
Name one planet or sign you actually understand. Write the quality in plain language, light and shadow. Then pull a card and ask: does this quality add something, or am I showing off?
Practice
Say it in English
Pick Mars, Venus, or Saturn. Write five lines a reader could use without ever saying the planet's name. Then open a card that people often link with that planet, or any card that feels like it, and try those lines. Keep the ones that came from the image.
