Course/Astrology and Tarot/The planets, one by one
Part 05
Mars
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
What this planet is
Mars, in this old language, is heat that wants a deed. Drive. Conflict. Courage. The will to act. A clean no and a clean go. Not a war god you have to perform. A living quality: something in this life wants to move, cut, protect, or start.
You know it in a raised voice that is information. In a body that will not sit through one more insult. In a workout. In a row. In the first step nobody else would take. You also know it as war in the kitchen, and heat that only knows how to cut.
Why it matters for a reader
If you are afraid of anger, you will misread half the deck. Wands. The Tower. Five of Swords. Seven of Wands. A Knight who is not in the mood to wait. Mars gives you a way to talk about heat without calling it bad, and without calling it destiny.
Readers who skip Mars become vague. Readers who only have Mars become blunt instruments. You need the quality, and you need the volume knob.
How to recognise it
In life: appetite, argument, libido, sport, the fever of a deadline, the first punch of a yes, a headache after a swallowed no. Also: irritability as a lifestyle. Rescue as combat. Peace that is only fear of heat.
In a card: lightning, fire, wands raised, armour, a tower struck, figures falling, a ram, a sword in motion, red, a stance that leans forward. Also: a smile with jaw clenched. Action with no listening.
Light
Courage. A clean no and a clean go. Heat in service of life. Protection that has a spine. Desire that tells the truth. The energy to start. Conflict that clears the air instead of scoring points.
Shadow
War in the kitchen. Heat that only knows how to cut. Cruelty dressed as honesty. Overexpression: living on fight so you never have to feel. Avoidance: swallowing every no until the body does the shouting, or calling yourself peaceful while you punish people with silence.
How it can deepen a card
A common correspondence links Mars with The Tower. Heat, strike, the thing that will not stay standing. That is a traditional teaching map used with this deck. Useful if it helps you feel the suddenness and the necessary break. Not useful if you recite Mars and stop looking at the lightning, the crown, the people in the air, the question.
Mars can also visit Aces of Wands, the Five of Wands, the Knight of Wands, the Seven of Wands, even Strength when the animal heat is in the room. The planet is a flavour. The card is still a picture. The picture wins.
When to leave it alone
Leave it when you would only mean violence in the news sense. Leave it when the card is a slow earth job and you are itching for drama. Leave it if Mars would excuse a cruelty you do not want to name. Heat is information. It is not a free pass. If you have to fetch a list to remember the link, do not perform it.
The Tower, heat that will not wait
Sit with The Tower. Lightning. A crown falling. Flame at the windows. Two figures in the air. A mountain. Traditional notes will talk about sudden change, collapse, revelation. Keep that. Then look.
A common link is Mars: heat, strike, the blade that does not wait for a hall of justice. Useful when the bolt is actually martial: action, blood-up, a yes that smashes a window. Not useful as a threat. Ask whether this strike is cruel or precise. Ask what was already starving inside the keep. The planet named the flavour. The image and the question finish the reading.

Find the heat
Open The Tower in the Tarot Library. Write where the heat is, and whether it looks clean, panicked, or both. Then pull one card for a place in your life you keep calling fine. Ask if any Mars quality is sitting there unused. If there is no heat, write that. Do not invent a war.
