What a tarot deck is

If you have six decks, pick one for this training and stay with it. Mixing systems while you are learning structure is how you stay vague. The pictures in this school are the Rider Waite Smith plates, so you and I are looking at the same door, the same three swords, the same wreath. If your physical deck is a cousin of that tradition, you will be able to follow. If it is a complete redesign, still learn the structure here, and then map it onto your images with extra care.

A tarot deck is not an oracle deck. Oracle decks can be beautiful. They do not have this architecture: twenty-two Majors, four suits, Ace to Ten, four courts. When I say tarot, I mean that architecture.

A Three of Cups is not only a Three of Cups. It is a Three, so it sits in a number story with the other Threes. It is Cups, so it sits in a watery field with the rest of its suit. It is a Minor, so it tends to speak in lived, situational language rather than in the big weather of a Major. When it lands beside a Sword, the field of feeling meets the field of thought. That is already a sentence.

You cannot hear that sentence if you only ever meet cards one at a time as flashcards. We will do flashcard work later, card by card. First I want you to respect the deck as one instrument.

Some people wrap a deck in silk and never let another person touch it. Some people keep it in the kitchen drawer and read after washing up. I care less about the theatre than about whether you will actually use it.

What I do care about: you can find it. You can shuffle it. You know which way the pictures face. You are not frightened of it. Reverence without superstition. We will do the practical handling in a later lesson. Today, know what the thing is.
