The Devil

The Devil

Major · XV

Traditional foundation

Traditionally, The Devil is bondage, appetite, the material world as a trap, the shadow you call by prettier names. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching this is ignorance, attachment, sexuality without soul, the deal. Waite's Devil is a hybrid on a block, and the humans under him are chained. The old books are moral about it. They are also, if you read them honestly, talking about energy that will not be prayed out of a body.

An inverted pentagram sits on the brow. Horns, bat wings, a torch in the left hand, a raised right. A naked man and woman, echoing The Lovers, chained at the throat to a plinth. Their tails show grapes and fire. The traditional reading is: something has you. Look at it. The chains are often loose enough to lift.

Keep that. Then look. Traditional Devil can be addiction, a golden cage, a toxic bond, money-fear, shame about wanting. It can also be vitality you have demonised, or a teacher of the body you will not admit you need. The inverted star and the lift-able chains will argue with both a horror caption and a rebel caption.

Where it sits in the deck

Fifteen sits between Temperance's careful pour and The Tower's strike. After mixing, a stuck mix. Number fifteen reduces to six: the Lovers' number, and the picture knows it. Same couple, different weather. If you do not look at The Lovers when you read The Devil, you are skipping the architecture.

The Tower is next because a bind that will not be lifted from inside often meets a crack from outside. I will not make that into a threat. I will ask you to feel the sequence: angel pouring, then devil perching, then lightning. Temperance can become The Devil when the mix is glue. The Devil can become The Tower when the glue is load-bearing.

Look at this image

Look at the chains before you look at the monster. Are they tight? How much slack? Could those two lift them over their heads? Look at their faces. In many printings they are almost placid. Why aren't they struggling, if this is hell?

The Devil sits on a black block, not a throne like The Emperor. A cube, a prison of matter. The inverted pentagram is a star pointing down. You have seen stars on The Empress's crown and The Star's sky. This one is a badge of reversal. The torch is burning, held down, a light that is also a weapon or a brand.

Compare them to The Lovers. Same naked pair, no angel, a fruiting tail, a flame tail, horns on the man in some printings. The mountain is gone. The trees are gone. Ask what grew instead. Notice the Devil is looking at you, unlike Strength's woman. This card knows it has an audience.

Symbols worth investigating

Chains at the throat that could be lifted are the whole teaching if you let them be. Investigate whether this bondage is real iron or a story the couple have agreed to. Do not file chains as abuse every time, and do not file them as fine every time. Look at the slack in this picture and this question.

The inverted pentagram is spirit pointed into matter, or a parody of the holy star, depending on the school and the reading. The torch is illumination used as heat and control. Grapes on a tail: appetite made anatomical. Fire on a tail: the other one's fuel. Ask which tail is yours. The cube is the world as a sealed room. The Empress's wheat does not grow here.

Colour in this card

Brown, black, the dirty gold of the block, a dead-dark sky, the paleness of the two bodies. This is one of the least oxygenated cards in the Majors. The colour climate is closed. If a little red in the torch or the fruit feels like life, it is life in a cellar. Ask whether that cellar heat is the only warmth they know. Do not pretty it into a nightclub unless the question is actually that.

Number

Fifteen as a six-plus-nine, or as a six reduced: the Lovers' pairing under a heavier load. In this card the number is the quality of a bond that has thickened. Six wanted harmony. Fifteen has harmony's shadow: fusion, habit, the we that cannot find the door. Feel whether this fifteen is a hot life that needs honouring, or a six that went rancid.

An astrological layer

Capricorn is the usual correspondence, which surprises people who wanted a sexy planet. Capricorn as the goat, the climb, the structure of the material, the devil as old god of the hill, the career, the bone of ambition, the fear of falling off the block.

That can deepen a reading about work-bondage, status, the deal you made to be safe, the body as a resource. If Capricorn would only be a goat joke, skip it. Use it when The Devil on the table is actually about a system of matter and rank, not only about lust.

What is this card doing?

Stuck heat. A downward gravity. Not Temperance's pour, not The Tower's strike. This is a current that loops in a cellar and calls the loop home.

Feel whether the heat is shame, appetite, power, or all three. Devil energy can be the most alive thing in a dried-out spread. It can also be the glue that will require lightning if nobody lifts a chain.

Light and shadow

Light. Honest appetite, owned. Looking at the chain and lifting it. Matter, sex, ambition, humour about the goat, without selling the throat.

Shadow. Bondage you will not name. Using shame or pleasure to stay on the block. A couple, a job, a habit that has replaced a life, while everyone insists they could leave any time.

How this can show up

Work: golden handcuffs, a boss, a grind, the identity that is only output. Self-work: addiction in the wide sense, the shadow, the body, the part you call too much. This card is often the most useful one on the table because it will not let you stay pretty.

Love: the Lovers gone underground. Chemistry with a collar. A pattern two people keep because the angel left and the block stayed. Ask about the slack in the chain before you prescribe leaving. Sometimes the reading is lift it. Sometimes the reading is you have not wanted to.

Same card, different reading

As advice, The Devil is look at the bind, name the want, test the chain. As a situation, a contract, inner or outer, is running the show. As a person, the seductive one, the controller, the addicted one, the one who is very honest about appetite. As a past, the deal that got you here.

After Temperance, the mix has thickened. Before The Tower, there is still a chance to lift the iron without the building coming down. Next to The Lovers, read them as a pair of cards, not as two captions. Concrete example: Devil in the present of a money spread, next to the Nine of Pentacles, is not you are evil for liking nice things. It is the grapes on the tail and the garden of the nine are cousins. Ask which one still has a gate.

Activity

Describe before you interpret

Cover the traditional notes above. Look at the image. Write only what you see. People, objects, weather, direction, colour, what is missing. No meaning yet.

Activity

Ask the card

How much slack is in these chains, really? What is on the block that I am calling a throne? Which Lovers-tree grew into a tail, fruit or fire? Is this heat shame, want, power, or a mix I will not taste? What would happen if I lifted the chain in front of the audience this Devil is staring at?

Practice

Practise this card

Look at The Devil. Cover the horned figure. Write only about the couple: chains, tails, faces, distance from each other. Then uncover him and write what he adds that they were already doing. Practice Room. Be specific about a bind in your own life. Do not write toxic unless the picture and the facts both demand it.
