The Law of Polarity

Polarity is another established Hermetic principle: everything has two poles. Hot and cold are a range, not two different worlds. Love and hate can be closer than they pretend. I did not invent this. It is the philosophical cousin of everything I teach about light and shadow.

The same energy, two expressions. A card is not good or bad. It is a quality that can be lived cleanly or distorted.

Because good card, bad card will make you a frightened reader. Polarity keeps you adult. Death can be honest ending. The Sun can be glare. The Devil can be appetite reclaimed. The Star can be hope that will not land.

Because querents need both poles named. Only light is a pep talk. Only shadow is a horror story. Neither is a reading.

The same stubbornness that keeps you in a marriage through a hard winter can keep you in a job that is done. The same sensitivity that makes you a good friend can flood you. Polarity is already in your character. Tarot just draws it.

Range. Compassion for the other pole. Skill at sliding a quality back toward balance instead of trying to kill it. No good cards, no bad cards.

Distortion: both-sides-ing harm. Pretending a cruel pole is just another flavour. Using polarity to avoid a moral decision that is actually simple. Also: swinging wildly from pole to pole and calling it balance.

People hear polarity and think they must honour every extreme. No. You can name a pole and still choose. Light and shadow of The Emperor does not mean tyranny is a valid lifestyle because structure has a dark side. Shadow is awareness. It is not an excuse.

Every card. This is the home law of the light-and-shadow module. Strength: courage or domination. Four of Swords: rest or disappearance. Ten of Cups: belonging or the postcard. Practise naming both, then choosing which pole this question is actually showing.

Child, horse, sunflowers, a red banner. Light: warmth, a self that can be seen, life that wants to play. Shadow: glare, no shade, performance of happiness, a child self that was never allowed to be ordinary. Same card. Two poles. The question decides.
