Cleansing
Smoke
Smoke is a traditional clearing method in more than one culture. If you use a plant that belongs to someone else's living tradition, know that, and do not treat it as a shop accessory.
You can also use kitchen herbs from your own garden, or skip smoke entirely. Fancy is not clearer.
What this is
Burning a dry plant so the air in a room changes, and so you mark a start or an end. Smudging is one name some people use. The job is attention, not a performance of ancient forces.
Why it matters
Leftover weather sticks. A heavy conversation. A frantic day. Smoke can mark: that was then, this is now. So can a window. If smoke is the only method you trust, it has become a prop.
How to recognise it
You will know it is working if you feel more here, not more frightened. You will know it is theatre if you cannot shuffle without it, or if you fill a neighbour's lungs as a ritual.
How to use it
Open a window. Use a dish that will not scorch. Keep flame small. Walk the room or sit still. A simple sentence is enough: I am clearing this space so I can look. Then put the plant out fully. Cards and smoke: a little air is enough. Do not bake a deck.
Light
A sensory cue that you have arrived. Respect for a plant. A room that smells like a start. Then you look.
Shadow
Borrowing a living tradition as an accessory. Panic if you cannot find a match. Smoke as a way to feel more special than a sink and a window. Filling a house until nobody can breathe.
Example
After a raw reading you light a small amount of a herb you actually know, open the window, and say the reading is finished. That is clearing. Lighting a bundle you cannot name because a shop said it was powerful is shopping, not practice.
Practice
Smoke or window
If you already use smoke, do it once with a window open and one plain sentence. Then shuffle. If you do not use smoke, open a window, tidy the table, and shuffle with attention. Write which actually left you clearer.
