Major Arcana

The High Priestess

II

This is revision. The course lesson teaches. Sit with the image first. Traditional meaning is the foundation, not the whole reading.

Traditional meaning

Traditionally, The High Priestess is inner knowing, mystery, the unconscious, patience, the hidden side of a situation. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching she sits between two pillars, a veil of pomegranates behind her, a moon at her feet, a scroll in her lap. Waite's Priestess is the guardian of what is not yet ready to be spoken.

The traditional note is: wait, listen, do not force the door. Intuition as quiet knowledge. Secrets. The unrevealed. Keep that. Then look. A woman on a threshold is not automatically wise. She can also be hiding. The veil and the water will tell you which.

Visual interpretation

Look at the pillars. One dark, one light. She sits in the middle, not belonging to either. Look at the veil. Can you see through it? Pomegranates. A pattern that is also a closed door.

The scroll is marked. On many printings you can read TORA, with the last letter hidden. Why show most of a teaching and hide the end? The moon at her feet is a crescent. Water runs behind the veil. Her face is calm and not particularly interested in performing for you.

Symbolism

Pomegranates on a veil are seed, underworld, the inside of fruit. Investigate whether this is fertility of the inner life, or a curtain you are not meant to rip.

The two pillars are a temple doorway. She is not the temple. She is the one who sits in it. Ask who put her there, and whether she chose it.

Colour

Blue robe, white, the black and white of the pillars, a hint of water. Cool palette. If the blue feels like depth, keep it. If it feels like distance, like she will not come down the steps, keep that.

Number

Two is meeting, split, balance, the other. Here the other is the unseen. Light: patience, true inner hearing. Shadow: using mystery as a way not to speak, or not to act.

Numerology

Two is meeting, split, balance, the other. Here the other is the unseen. Light: patience, true inner hearing. Shadow: using mystery as a way not to speak, or not to act.

Astrology

A common correspondence is the Moon. Cycles, tides, what is felt before it is named. Use it when this Priestess actually feels lunar. If she is simply a boundary, you do not need the sky.

Energy

Still. Receptive. A held silence. Not stuck like a Four of Swords rest. Chosen stillness. Water moving behind her while she does not move.

Light expression

Knowing without grabbing. Waiting until the thing is ripe. A clean no to forcing.

Shadow expression

Withholding as power. Hiding behind intuition. Refusing to come out from behind the veil when the question actually needs a sentence.

Archetype

Two. Polarity, the other, the inner counterpart to The Magician's outer act. After the table of tools, a veil. The Empress is next, and she will be the garden in full. The Priestess is the water behind the curtain. Number two here is not a couple on a card. It is the pair of pillars, B and J, the yes and no she sits between without collapsing into either.

Intuitive questions

What is behind the veil in this question, and is it time to look, or time to wait?

Which pillar am I leaning on, dark or light, and what happens if I sit in the middle?

What is on the scroll that I already know and will not read to the last letter?

Is this silence wisdom, or a hiding?

Reflection

As advice: listen, do not push. As a problem: the secret is costing you. Next to The Magician, inner and outer want a conversation. Next to The Empress, the water wants a body. Next to the Seven of Cups, mystery may be fantasy. Look.

Practice

Sit with The High Priestess for one full minute without writing. Then write only what you noticed in the silence. Then look at the scroll and the water. Practice Room. Do not invent a secret to feel deep.
