The Emperor

Traditionally, The Emperor is structure, authority, fathering, order, the making of rules and walls. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching he sits on a stone throne decorated with rams, armoured, mountains behind him, an ankh sceptre and an orb in his hands. Waite's Emperor is the organiser of the world The Empress grew.

The traditional note is: leadership, stability, the plan, the boundary, the one who decides. Keep that. Then look. A throne on rock can be safety. It can be a freeze. The armour and the mountains will tell you which.

Look at the armour under the robe. He is seated as a ruler and still dressed for a fight. Why? Look at the ram heads on the throne. Look at the orange of the sky and the barren mountains. There is little growing here. The Empress's wheat did not follow him up the rock.

The ankh is a living cross in his right hand. The orb is the world in his left. He looks slightly aside, not fully at you. Is that watchfulness, weariness, or command that does not need to make eye contact?

Rams are will, head-first, the Aries flavour of starting and ruling. Investigate whether this is protection of a people, or a head that will not turn.

Mountains are endurance and isolation. Stone is what lasts and what does not bend. Ask what he is defending, and what cannot grow on that rock.

Reds, oranges, golds, grey rock. A fire-over-stone palette. If it feels like sunset power, keep it. If it feels like a drought with a crown on, keep that.

Four as structure. Light: a reliable frame. Shadow: a box. The Emperor is the four that can hold a life up, or pin it down.

A common correspondence is Aries. Initiative, rule, the ram, the first spark of the zodiac year. That is why the rams are on the throne. Use it if this Emperor actually feels like a starter and a commander. If he is simply dad, or a job title, you do not need the sign.

Held. Vertical. A spine. Not The Empress's climate. A decision that stays decided. Can be reassuring. Can be rigid.

A backbone. Fair rules. Protection that has a plan. Someone who will still be there on Tuesday.

Control dressed as order. Armour that never comes off. A mountain that will not let anyone plant.

Four. Structure, foundation, a box with legs. After The Empress's living ground, stone. The Hierophant is next: another throne, this time of teaching and tradition. Number four here is order. The Emperor is the will of The Magician put into law, after nature has had her say.

As advice: put a structure under this. As a problem: too much wall. Next to The Empress, ask whether the garden is being protected or paved. Next to The Hierophant, personal rule meets inherited rule. Next to The Tower, this stone may be the thing that cracks.
