The Moon
XVIII
This is revision. The course lesson teaches. Sit with the image first. Traditional meaning is the foundation, not the whole reading.
Traditional meaning
Traditionally, The Moon is illusion, fear, the unconscious, the path that is true and not well lit. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching this is dream, confusion, instinct, the work of walking when you cannot have The Sun yet. Waite's Moon is a face in a night-sun, pulling tides, dropping fire, watching a road that goes between two towers.
A crayfish crawls out of a pool toward a path. A dog and a wolf stand on either side, one domestic, one wild, both sounding. Two towers, like Death's distant gate now close enough to pass. Drops of yod falling from the moon. A moon-face in a great disk. The traditional reading is: not everything you see is as it is. Feel. Do not pretend you are in daylight. The path is still a path.
Keep that. Then look. Traditional Moon can be anxiety, poetry, a psychic opening, a lie, a cycle of the body. It can also be a reader dumping mystery on a card because they are afraid of it. The crayfish and the two howling animals will tell you more than the word illusion.
Visual interpretation
Look at the crayfish. It is the only thing on the path's beginning, armoured, from water, sideways by nature even if it is crawling forward. Why this creature, not a human? Look at the dog and the wolf. One has a collar. One does not. They both have their mouths open. Are they warning, worshipping, hunting, terrified?
The towers are windowed, the same pair Death showed you far off. Now you could walk between them. The path goes to the horizon and does not tell you what is after. The moon has a face. It is looking. The drops are falling. Ask whether they are blessings, sparks, or a rain of unclaimed fire.
This is a night card with a lot of yellow in it. Notice that. The Moon is not only blue mystery. There is a sick gold, or a holy gold, depending on the printing and your gut. Where does the eye go first: face, crayfish, path, towers, animals? That is your entrance to the half-light.
Symbolism
Dog and wolf are the tamed and the wild answering the same sky. Investigate whether this question is a fight between those two, or a chorus. Do not file wolf as danger and dog as safety every time. A collared animal can bite. A wild one can tell the truth.
The crayfish is the thing crawling out of the pool: instinct, the old brain, a feeling with armour on. The path is the invitation to walk anyway. The towers are gates, sentinels, the same architecture as Death's sun-gap, now something you could pass. The face in the moon is consciousness in the night-mind. Ask if it is kindly. Ask if it is watching you fail to choose.
Colour
Yellow-gold moon and drops, blue-green path and hills, the brown of the animals, the pale crayfish, two grey-blue towers. The yellow is doing a light that is not daylight. It can be vision. It can be nausea. It can be the colour of a streetlamp that makes everything look slightly wrong. If the blue feels like depth, keep it. If it feels like bruise, keep that. Colour here is the climate of not-quite-seeing.
Number
Eighteen as a nine doubled, The Hermit's almost made into a landscape. In this card the number is the quality of a fullness that is not clear. Culmination in the dark. Feel whether this eighteen is a rich night, or an exhaustion of almost-dawn that will not break. The Sun is nineteen. This is the last of the not-yet.

Astrology
Pisces is the usual correspondence. Pisces as the tide, the dream, the compassion, the dissolve, the two fish pulling, the gift of feeling everything, the fog that comes with that gift.
That can deepen a reading about mercy, about art, about a boundary problem, about a spiritual hunger. If Pisces would only be watery personality, skip it. Use it when the crayfish and the pool are actually the point: something climbing out of feeling into a path, sideways, armoured, brave in a small way.
Energy
Pulling, sounding, sideways-forward. This is not The Star's clean pour and not The Sun's open ride. The energy is tidal, nocturnal, a path with voices on it.
Feel whether the pull is guidance or undertow. Moon energy can give a reading its poetry and its warning at once. It can also be the room where everyone is a little unwell and calling it intuition.
Light expression
Walking the path with incomplete light. Instinct honoured, dreams used as information, the wild and the tame both allowed to speak.
Shadow expression
Fog as a home. Fear making pictures. Lying, including to yourself, and calling it mystery. Refusing The Sun because the night feels more special.
Archetype
Eighteen sits between The Star's counted lights and The Sun's child on a horse. After grace, murk. Before noon, the long road. Number eighteen reduces to nine: The Hermit's number, the almost, the inner lamp. Here the lamp is in the sky and it is also a face, and it is not enough to make the crayfish into a person yet.
The Sun is next. Feel the neighbour as a relief you are not allowed to steal early. The Moon is the test of whether you can walk with half-knowledge. If you only read it as anxiety, you will miss the path. If you only read it as magic, you will miss the dog and the wolf, who are not the same animal, sounding at the same moon.
Intuitive questions
What is crawling out of the pool, and why is it armoured?
Which is louder in me, the dog or the wolf?
Are these towers a gate I can pass, or sentinels I am afraid of?
What is the moon-face doing: blessing, watching, distorting?
If I walked the path as far as the picture goes, what would I have to stop pretending?
Reflection
As advice, The Moon is feel, wait for more light, do not sign in the fog if you can help it. As a situation, something is not as it appears, or is as it appears and you do not want that. As a person, the dreamer, the frightened one, the psychic, the liar. Context decides.
After The Star, counted hope meets a road. Before The Sun, you are not yet the child on the horse. Next to The High Priestess, two lunar cards: one still and veiled, this one howling and crawling. Concrete example: Moon in the advice position of a dating spread, next to the Knight of Cups, is not follow the romance. It is something in the pool is coming out sideways. Let it, and do not marry the howl.
Practice
Look at The Moon. Cover the moon-face. Write about the ground-level only: crayfish, dog, wolf, path, towers. Then uncover the face and write what the sky adds that the ground had not said. Practice Room. Name one current fog without curing it. Looking is the work. Clarity is The Sun's job, and that card is next, not now.
