King of Wands

Traditionally the King of Wands is a man of fire: a leader, an entrepreneur, honest, hasty, noble, a figure of authority in enterprise and country matters. Old books talk about a dark man, a friendly ally, a person who can command, sometimes severe.

Foundation, then we stop flattening Kings into masculine and Queens into feminine. This King is a stage of fire: heat that has been through enough to become direction. Vision as a job. Will that can last, lead, and not need to be the flame every second. Any person can carry this. The salamander at his feet does not care about the old gender grid.

He looks to the left of the card, off toward something we cannot see, not performing for us the way a lesser reader might want a king to.

At his feet a small salamander or lizard looks up at him, live fire in miniature, the same creature that is only a print on the Page and the Knight. Here it has crawled into the room. The land is open, pyramids or far hills, no crowd, no rearing horse. Authority in a hot empty place.

Notice the wand rests on the ground. Contact. Not the Eight's flight, not the Page's stare at the tip, not the Knight's forward thrust only. Notice the gaze is elsewhere, visionary or distant. Notice he can sit. What caught you first: the little lizard, the cloak, the far look, or the fact of a fire that has a chair?

The salamander is the old creature of the fire element, sometimes drawn eating its own tail on this cloak as a cycle of heat that feeds itself. Even without over-reading the embroidery, the live one at his feet is the point: mature fire can keep a small living flame nearby without panicking or stomping it. Can this King tolerate a Page? The lizard is the exam.

Wand on the ground: will that has contact with reality. Vision with a stick in the dirt. Traditional leadership is fair. The extra is embodiment. A king whose staff does not touch the earth is only a speech. This one does.

Lions on the throne, as with the Queen: pride, courage, the animal of the suit, now a chair you sit on rather than a beast you ride. The far look: strategy, restlessness that never fully dies, a person who is with you and already two towns ahead. Ask whether that gaze is gift or absence. Some Kings lead. Some Kings are simply not in the room they are sitting in.

Gold again, the suit's daylight, with green salamanders stitched through the yellow so the cloak is fire-plus-life, not a flat sun. The little dark lizard is a second black-cat move, a living dark on a bright card. The throne is red-gold, heavier than the Queen's sunflower back.

If the green embroidery is what you see, this King may be about keeping fire fertile, not only dominant. If the gold is a wall, you may be meeting authority as glare. Let the colour tell you whether this throne warms a desert or just owns it. No chart will do that for you.

Traditionally some schools call the King fire of fire: the suit in its own element, will squared, the purest climate of Wands in a person-shaped seat. Others hang later fire signs on him, Leo or Sagittarius depending on the book. I will not make you memorise a decan to read a lizard.

Fire-of-fire is useful when it names intensity that can either hold a vision for years or burn the staff room down. If this King feels like too much heat in a closed room, that correspondence has earned its keep. If it feels like a sticker, peel it off. The grounded wand is the better teacher.

Held, directed, far-seeing, heavier than the Queen in the bones, slower than the Knight, hotter than a Pentacle king. Expansion as a plan that can take years. Stillness that is command, not sleep. You feel it in the spine and behind the eyes.

It can feel like relief if you have needed someone to hold the fire. It can feel like pressure if you are the lizard hoping not to be forgotten. If you feel yourself sitting up straighter, you are in the light of it. If you feel yourself performing competence, you may be in the costume.

Vision that other people's sparks can live inside. You hold the wand to the ground, you look far, you lead the heat without needing to be the only flame, and you let the small salamander stay alive at your feet.

Tyranny of vision. People as fuel. So identified with being the one who knows that no Page is allowed to spark and no Knight may leave without permission. Haste dressed as authority. Or a hollow throne: the cloak, the lions, no live lizard, a King of Wands who went out years ago and kept the meeting anyway.

Page discovered. Knight travelled. Queen became climate. King is fire as stewardship. Developmental stage: the will that other sparks can live inside without being snuffed or used as kindling. Not 'the man of Wands.' The maturity where passion has a policy.

He can be a person, a part of you, a behaviour the question is asking for, a future self, or a shadow of tyranny. Context decides. The numbered Tens carried too much. This King is what fire looks like when someone can sit, hold a wand that touches the ground, and still see past the throne. Same suit. Later in the human line.

Where does this wand actually touch the ground in your life?

Is the little salamander safe around you, the new spark, the junior fire, the idea that is not yours?

Are you looking far because you lead, or because you are not in the room?

What would stewardship of your will look like for the next year, not the next hour?

As advice: be the steward. Think in a longer fire than a mood. Put the staff on the actual ground. As challenge: you are ruling a desert that did not elect you, or you are refusing a throne that is already yours and making everyone else hold your wands.

In work this is leadership, enterprise, the person who can say where the heat goes. In love it can be a steady passionate ally, or a partner who is always looking off-card at a future you are not in. The gaze's direction matters more than the crown.

Beside the Queen, two mature fires: climate and direction, hearth and horizon. Together they can run a world. In conflict they are pride versus pride. Beside the Ten, a King who may be about to pick up too much again. Beside the Ace, a leader who still knows how to receive a new spark. That last one is the hope of the whole suit.

Sit in a chair with a straight back and the King of Wands. Place a stick, a pen or a tool so one end is on the floor. Look past the opposite wall as he looks past the card. Write a vision that other people could actually live inside, then write what you would have to stop clutching for that to be true. Check whether any live spark at your feet would survive your leadership. Traditional king-of-fire notes last, and only as a foundation.
