Lesson 05
Journaling recurring patterns
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
One sighting is a moment. A month of sightings is a pattern. Patterns are how you stop guessing.
This is also where we name confirmation bias out loud, because if we do not, the journal becomes a shrine to what you hoped.
How to record
Use the journal. Type: number sighting. Write the number, the date if you have it, the context, the first impression, the light, the shadow, what you think it said, and what you wanted it to say. Those last two are different more often than people admit.
Then leave it. Come back in two weeks. See what actually happened in your life, not what you hoped would happen. That review is the practice. Without it you only have a collection of wishes.
Confirmation bias, named
Once you decide 111 means go, you will see 111 when you want to go, and you will not count the days you saw it and nothing happened. That is a human mind doing what human minds do. It is not a spiritual failure. It is a reason we keep records.
Ask, every time: could I be projecting the meaning I want onto the number? What evidence or repeated pattern am I actually observing? What would I write if this number meant the opposite of my hope?
If a number keeps appearing across weeks, in different moods, attached to the same theme in your life, that is more interesting than one clock at a party. Frequency plus context plus review. Not a screenshot.
What a review looks like
You logged 444 three times in a week while deciding whether to leave a job. Light you wrote: structure, a container, enough. Shadow you wrote: a box, fear of leaving the square. Two weeks later you are still in the job, still seeing fours, still calling them a sign to stay. Or you left, and the fours stopped, or became tens. The journal lets you see which story you kept feeding.
I am not telling you what 444 means. I am telling you to check your life.
Practice
Start the log
Log three number sightings you already remember, even roughly. If you cannot remember three, start from today. The next one you see, write it before you ask the internet. Set a note to review in two weeks. That review is part of the homework.
