Course/Card Energy, Light and Shadow
Lesson 01
A card is not only a definition
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
A card is not a definition. It is a living energy. You can feel that before you remember a single keyword.
By now you know The Fool, the Three of Swords, the Ten of Pentacles. You know what the book tends to say. This lesson asks a different question. What is the card doing?
Ask what it is doing
Meaning is a noun. Energy is a verb. The Fool is not only new beginnings. The Fool is stepping. Risking. Not looking. Trusting. Leaving. Depending on the picture in your deck, it might be dancing on a cliff or wandering into a morning.
Three of Swords is not only heartbreak. It is piercing. Weathering. Naming a wound. Sitting in rain that will not stop yet. Ten of Pentacles is not only wealth. It is gathering. Inheriting. Completing a material cycle. Holding a household together, or being held by one.
When you ask what the card is doing, you get movement, tone, and temperature. That is more useful at the table than a caption.

Words for how a card sits
Heavy. Light. Fast. Slow. Active. Passive. Expansion. Contraction. Conflict. Harmony. Movement. Stillness. Giving. Receiving. Growth. Stagnation. Beginning. Ending. Transformation. Internal. External.
You do not need all of those every time. Pick the ones that are true. A card can be heavy and kind. Fast and frightened. Still and complete.
The Fool often feels like open air. Three of Swords often feels like weather that has already arrived. Ten of Pentacles often feels like a full house. Feel those, then check the actual image in your deck. Your deck might speak differently. That is looking, which you already know how to do.
Three of Swords, as a verb
If I only say heartbreak, I have given you a noun and sent you home. If I ask what the card is doing, I have to stay.
In many decks the heart is already pierced. The rain is already falling. Nothing in the picture is winding up to hurt you. The hurt is present. The card is in the weather of it. That changes how you speak. You are not predicting an accident. You are looking at a truth that is already in the room.
Same card, different deck, different weather. Always look. The verb still matters more than the title.
The energy can shift
Same card, different question, different neighbours, different you. That is why we do not tattoo a mood onto a picture and call it a day.
The Fool beside the Ten of Pentacles is a different conversation from The Fool beside the Three of Swords. One looks like leaving a household. One looks like walking into a wound with your eyes open, or walking out of one. Do not decide The Fool’s mood in advance.
Practice
Energy before the name
Pull a card. Before you even say its name, write three energy words. Then name it. Then look. Then see whether the traditional note, when you get to it, agrees, argues, or adds. If you pulled a card you know well, all the better. Knowing the caption is what you are practising not to hide behind.
