Course/Card Energy, Light and Shadow
Lesson 02
Light and shadow of archetypes
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
Every tarot archetype has more than one expression. There are no good cards and bad cards. I will not teach you to fear a picture.
Light is not good. Shadow is not bad. Light is the energy when it is balanced, conscious, and constructive. Shadow is what happens when the same energy is blocked, excessive, distorted, avoided, or unconscious.
The same energy, two expressions
Light: how does this energy look when it is balanced and honestly lived?
Shadow: how can the same energy become blocked, excessive, distorted, avoided, or unconscious?
The shadow does not mean something bad will happen. It is an area that may need awareness, honesty, healing, reflection, or a conscious choice.
Death is not a horror film. The Sun is not a guarantee. A difficult-looking card can be the kindest thing on the table. A pretty card can be a trap if it is showing where you are refusing to look.
Three of Swords, both faces
Light: finally telling the truth. Finally grieving. Finally letting the rain do its job. Naming the wound so it stops running the house from the cellar.
Shadow: rehearsing the stab. Making an identity out of being the one who was hurt. Refusing to come in out of the rain. Using the wound as a reason not to live.
I am not giving you a new caption. I am showing you why fear is a lazy reading. The card is the weather of heart-truth. What you do with that weather is the reading.

The Sun
Major · XIX
The Sun and The Fool, because pretty is not proof
The Sun in the light is warmth, clarity, a life that can be stood in without squinting. In the shadow it can be glare. Performance. Refusing to admit there is anything left in the dark. A forced positivity that will not let anyone be sad in the room.
The Fool in the light is trust, a true beginning, the courage to step. In the shadow it is refusal to look, naivety that costs other people, a leap that is actually an escape.
Ten of Pentacles in the light is a living lineage, enough, a household that holds. In the shadow it is a gilded cage, a family script you cannot leave, wealth that has replaced warmth.
You cannot know which face you have from the title. You know it from the question, the position, the neighbours, the image, and your honest first impression.
Over, under, avoided
Shadow is not only excess. It is also absence. The Emperor can dominate. The Emperor can also be the structure nobody is willing to be. Strength can force. Strength can also be the courage you will not pick up.
Ask: is this energy too much, too little, or not in the room at all? Avoided energy is still a reading. The missing thing is part of the sentence.
Practice
Name both
Pull a card people think of as difficult, or one people think of as lucky. Write the light expression in this question. Write the shadow. Then write which one the surrounding cards, or your intuition, actually point to. If you only have one card, the question still decides. Do not pick the face you prefer. Pick the face that is here.
