Choose a layout that matches the question. Do not pick Relationship because it has more cards and you are anxious. More cards is not more truth. It is more voices, which you then have to hear.

Look at the whole table before you marry one card. Notice the first impression of the spread. Then study the seats. Then the relationships. Then bring it together. Traditional meaning last, as always.

Do not force. If a position is quiet, let it be quiet. If two cards argue, let them argue. If the story is a snapshot, do not pad it into a saga.

Why it works: one voice. Perfect when you are learning to actually see a card, or when the question is already clean. It is also the honest choice when you are tempted to bury a simple question under extra cardboard.

The position: the card. The heart of the matter, right now. There are no neighbours to hide behind, which is why this layout trains you.

How to approach: first impression, look, energy, light and shadow, the question. That is a complete reading. How not to force: do not pull a second card because the first one was uncomfortable. Sit with it.

How the whole works: the whole is the one card, read through the question, with your intuition on the table. If you cannot do this well, more cards will only give you more places to hide.

Why it works: a conversation. Two voices. What is present, and what it is meeting, asking, or becoming.

Positions: This, and That. Not automatically good and bad. Not automatically you and them. This is what is here. That is what it is in relationship with.

How they interact: reinforcement, contradiction, complement, explanation. Facing and movement matter more here than in a larger spread, because there is nowhere else for the eye to go.

How not to force: do not decide in advance that card two is advice. If you needed advice as a labelled seat, use Situation Challenge Advice. Here the second card might be a consequence, a person, a hidden face of the first, or a next step. Look, then name the relationship.

Why it works: the workhorse. Three is enough for a beginning, a middle, and an end, or for a situation, a turn, and a result. You choose the story once you see the cards, unless you named the seats before you shuffled.

Positions: Card 1 where this starts, Card 2 what sits in the middle, Card 3 where it is heading or what it wants from you. If you named different jobs, honour those instead. Do not change the jobs after you see a card you dislike.

How they interact: this is the first layout where story and progression become obvious. Read the line. Then read the pairs. One and two. Two and three. One and three, which people skip, and which often holds the real sentence.

How not to force: not every three is a novel. Some are a snapshot with three layers of the same weather. If all three cards are saying one thing, that is the reading. Do not invent a plot twist to look skilled.

Why it works: a line through time. Not a fortune. A way of seeing how the energy has been moving.

Positions: Past, what you are carrying in. Present, what is live right now. Future, the direction this energy wants to travel if nothing honest changes. That last clause matters. The future card is not a court sentence. It is a trajectory.

How they interact: the present is the hinge. If the past and future look alike, you may be looping. If they argue, the present is the work. Progression and regression are at home here.

How not to force: do not treat the future as fate. Do not treat the past as blame. Do not skip the present because you are hungry for the ending. Read the whole line as one movement, then say what would change the trajectory if the person actually chose.

Why it works: when you are in it, and you need a straight look. What is going on, what is in the way, what to do with yourself.

Positions: Situation, the field you are standing in. Challenge, the friction, which is not always an enemy. Advice, the honest move.

How they interact: the challenge explains the situation. The advice has to be readable as a response to both, not a pretty card you isolate. If the advice seems to argue with the situation, that argument may be the point. Growth often looks like disagreement on the table.

How not to force: the challenge is not automatically a villain. Rest can be a challenge. Kindness can be a challenge. The Star as challenge might be hope you are using to avoid the work. Advice is not a command from the universe. It is the honest move, spoken without theatre.

Why it works: the heart, without the fairy tale. You, them, and the space between. Three seats, because a bond is not only two people. The relationship itself has a weather.

Positions: You, how you are showing up in love. Them, the other person, or the part of you that is them. The space between, the relationship itself.

How they interact: this is a triangle. Read each pair. You and them. You and the space between. Them and the space between. If you and them look like a match and the middle card is a storm, the bond has a life that is not identical to either person. That is useful information. If the middle card is warm and the two people cards are armed, the relationship may be kinder than the people currently sitting in it.

How not to force: them is not always a specific other. It can be the beloved you are imagining, or a part of you. Do not turn a self-reading into a verdict on someone who did not sit down. Do not promise a future the cards did not show because the Two of Cups made you lonely.

Why it works: work, calling, money, the thing you do with your days. Where you are, what wants moving, where the energy could go.

Positions: Where you are, the current work energy. What is stuck, the drag, the fear, the old pattern. The path, a constructive next expression.

How they interact: the stuck card should be allowed to be practical. Money, body, a boss, a skill gap, a household duty. Do not spiritualise a Pentacles problem into a soul lesson until you have looked at the bills. The path card has to answer the stuck card, not ignore it.

How not to force: this is not a job title generator. Ace of Pentacles is not a contract in the post. The path is an expression of energy. You still have to write the application, have the conversation, rest, or leave. The cards will not do the living.

Why it works: a mirror. Not a personality quiz. What is true, what is hiding, what is ready.

Positions: What is true, the part of you that is already here. What is hiding, the bit you would rather not look at. Shadow is not a monster. What is ready, the invitation.

How they interact: the hidden card often explains the true one. The ready card should be a step that could actually be taken, not a new identity you perform. If all three are Majors, the weather is archetypal. Stay humble. Stay specific.

How not to force: do not use the hidden seat to invent a trauma you have not got, and do not use the ready seat as a rebrand. If the ready card is rest, rest. If it is a conversation, have it. Self discovery that never leaves the journal is just a hobby.

Why it works: two paths and the thing underneath them. Useful when you are spinning.

Positions: Option A, the energy of this choice. Option B, the energy of the other choice. Underneath, what the decision is really about.

How they interact: A and B are not scores. Do not add up pretty cards and call it a winner. Read each option as a life you would have to inhabit. Then let the underneath card tell you why this decision has so much heat. Often the underneath is the real question, and A and B are costumes.

How not to force: do not use this spread to outsource a choice you are capable of making. The cards can show energy. They cannot want your life more than you do. If the underneath card is fear, name that. A decision made to quiet fear is still a decision. Know that you made it.

Why it works: a fuller look at a bond. You, them, the dynamic, the lesson, the next honest step. Five seats, because a relationship is a system.

Positions: You. Them. The dynamic, what the relationship does when you are both in the room. The lesson, what it is teaching, even if nobody asked for the class. The next step, a constructive move from here.

How they interact: read it in two passes. First, you and them and the dynamic as the living knot. Second, lesson and next step as what to do with the knot. The next step that ignores the lesson is a pretty card you will not live. The lesson with no next step is a lecture.

How not to force: five cards can become a novel if you let them. Keep the sentences short. Do not decide the other person’s inner life with a confidence you have not earned. Speak the dynamic as something both people participate in, even when one card looks like a villain. If you are reading for yourself about someone else, remember they did not shuffle.

Why it works: your layout. You are in charge of what each place means. Use it when the school’s rooms do not match the question, and you are honest enough to name seats before you shuffle.

How to approach: write the positions first. Two to five cards. Give each seat a job you could explain to a friend. Then shuffle. Then do not rename a seat because you dislike the card that landed in it.

How they interact: same grammar as every other spread. Reinforcement, contradiction, complement, facing, story. The Method does not take the day off because you designed the room.

How not to force: do not invent seven extra seats because you are anxious. Custom is not a loophole for more cardboard. If you cannot name the job, you do not need the card.
