Course/Combinations, Questions and Spreads
Lesson 04
The energy of the question
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
A tarot card does not exist in isolation. The question matters. The position matters. The surrounding cards matter. Your intuition matters. The energy of the reading matters.
A sloppy question gets a sloppy reading. This lesson is how to feel the question as part of the table, not as a caption you typed and forgot.
The formula, lived
Card plus question plus position plus context plus surrounding cards plus intuition. Not card equals fixed answer.
The question is an energy. What does he think of me, asked six times, is a hunger, not a question. What is the honest energy between us this month, asked once, is a question you can sit with.
If a question is a trap, say so. Help yourself ask something you can actually look at. Will they come back is often Will I have to feel this. Those are different tables.
Wording, intention, emotion
Wording: closed questions that want a yes tend to pick a fight with a visual language. Tarot will still answer, but it answers in pictures, not in ticks. Open the question enough that a card has room to do something.
Intention: why are you asking? To see, or to be soothed, or to be given permission? The cards can work with the first. The second and third will keep pulling until they hear the lullaby.
Emotion: the feeling in the question sits down with you. Grief makes every Swords card louder. Hope makes every Cups card look like a promise. Name the emotion before you shuffle. Then you can tell it apart from the table.
Same card, different question
Three of Swords on Will they come back? is one conversation. Three of Swords on What am I not grieving? is another. Three of Swords on What does this job need from me? is a third. Three of Swords in an advice position might be tell the truth even if it is sharp.
The Fool on Should I leave? is not The Fool on How do I begin? One is a cliff. One is a road. Same walker. Different question in their mouth.
Ten of Pentacles on Is this the right house? is material and lineage and enough. Ten of Pentacles on What is blocking my creativity? might be the household script, the respectable life, the fear of being the odd one in a full family. The card did not change. The question did.
Activity
Make the question readable
Write a question you have been circling. Then write a cleaner version that you could actually sit with. Then pull one card for the cleaner question only. Do not also pull for the hungry version. That is how the loop gets back in.
Practice
One card, two wordings
Write two versions of the same concern, one closed and hungry, one honest and lookable. Pull one card. Read it through the honest wording. Then, without pulling again, notice how the hungry wording would have bullied the same picture. Write both. Keep the honest one.
