Course/Combinations, Questions and Spreads
Lesson 03
Story, beginning, middle, end
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
A connected narrative, without forcing a fairytale. Not every spread is a novel. Some are a snapshot. Some are a shove.
When you tell the story, tell the one on the table. Not the one you wish was there.
Beginning, middle, end, when it is actually there
Past, present, future is a line through time. Situation, challenge, advice is a line of a different kind. Love spreads are often a triangle more than a story. Decision spreads are a fork. Relationship spreads have several rooms.
Do not force a beginning-middle-end onto a spread that is doing something else. Do listen for movement. Is something starting, turning, finishing, looping?
A story in this school is one paragraph that needs all the cards. If you can lift a sentence out and it still works as a lonely caption, you have not joined them yet.
Do not write the novel you prefer
The mind loves plot. It will add a reunion, a villain, a moral. Check the picture. If the figures are walking away from each other, do not write a kiss at dusk because you know how films end.
Progression is allowed. So is a story that stalls. So is a story that ends in the middle of the table. Honesty is the narrative skill. Cleverness is optional.
Three cards as one paragraph
The Fool, Eight of Pentacles, Ten of Pentacles. A beginning that is asking for craft, on the way to a household or a completed material life. Or: you want the harvest without the apprenticeship. Position decides. If the Eight is the middle, the work is the path. If the Eight is the challenge, the work is what you are resisting on the way to enough.
Three of Swords, Five of Cups, Star. Grief named, grief counted, a quieter hope after. That is a story. Do not skip the middle cup-spilling because you like the ending better.
Practice
One paragraph, not three captions
Past, present, future. Write one paragraph that needs all three cards. If you can lift a sentence out and it still works as a lonely caption, you have not joined them yet. Then write a second version that is shorter. Shorter often tells you what the story actually was.
