The full process
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
Seventeen steps. One voice. You will not perform all seventeen out loud for a friend in the pub. You will have them in your bones so that when you are nervous you still know where you are.
When you are new, skip a step and you will sprint to the book. When you are experienced, the steps collapse into looking. That is the point of practice. This is a process that becomes natural, not a script you recite.
A path, not a cage
A complete reading has a shape. You arrive. You know what you are asking. You look at the whole table. You catch the first hit. You study. You bring it together. You say it cleanly. You stop.
The seventeen steps are that shape, written slowly enough to learn. They are not a performance. If you find yourself announcing step nine to a querent, you have missed the point.

Steps one to three: arrive
Prepare and ground. If you are not here, the rest is theatre. Feet, breath, room, deck. Your state sits down whether you notice it or not. Notice it.
Set the intention. I will look honestly. I will not hunt for a lullaby. I will stop when the reading is done. Intention is not a spell. It is a decision about how you will behave at the table.
Understand the question. If the question is a trap, stop and clean it. If you do not know what you are asking, you will not know what you have seen. This is the energy of the question, lived at the start of a reading instead of remembered afterwards.
Steps four and five: the whole table, then the first hit
Observe the spread as a whole before you marry one card. Suits. Majors. Direction. Weather. Repeats. The feeling of the table. A reading that starts in one corner often never finds the sentence.
Notice the first intuitive response and write it down before you get clever. A word is enough. A body note is enough. This is the habit you trained in Developing Intuition. It still goes first, even now that the process is longer.
Steps six to fourteen: study, without drowning
Study individual cards. Then imagery and symbolism. Then colour. Then numbers and numerology. Then astrology and any spiritual correspondence that is actually relevant. Then energetic qualities. Then light and shadow. Then repeated patterns. Then relationships between cards.
That looks like a lot. It is a lot if you treat it as a checklist you must perform. It is not a lot if you let the speaking layers lead, as you did in Reading beyond the card.
If colour is silent, do not invent a colour lecture. If astrology adds nothing, skip it. If two cards are arguing, that argument may be more important than a symbol you could write an essay about. Discernment is the study.
Steps fifteen to seventeen: the book, the whole, the voice
Then, and only then, compare with traditional meaning. Honour what the tradition holds. Do not let it overwrite what you saw. If they agree, good. If they argue, that argument belongs in the reading. If you have no idea, say you are using the foundation and still looking. False certainty is not step seventeen.
Bring everything together. One story. One weather. A few honest sentences that need the whole table. This is not a tour of every card in isolation.
Communicate the interpretation clearly and responsibly. Then stop. Closing is part of the process. A reading that never ends is not thorough. It is leakage.
Practice
Walk it once, slowly
Choose a three-card spread that matches a real question. Open Reading and Spreads. Work the questions in order. Journal anything that does not fit in a box. Do not skip traditional meaning at the end. Do not skip the first impression at the start. When you finish, write which steps you actually used and which you performed out of nerves.
