Course/Developing Intuition

Lesson 04

Intuition is not fear

Discernment. Fear shouts. Intuition is usually cleaner.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

Intuition is not fear in a costume. Fear shouts. Intuition is usually cleaner.

I will not tell you there is one magical sensation that proves something is intuition. Anyone who sells you that is selling you a shortcut. What I can teach you is the flavour of fear, so you stop calling it a message.

Fear has a flavour

Fear usually narrates. It piles on. It is urgent in a way that shrinks the room. It is very interested in worst cases. It wants you to run, or to pull another card, or to send a message you will regret.

A clean impression can be serious without being theatrical. It can be a no that sits still. It can be a tightness that does not need a speech. It can say this is grief, or this is a closed door, without turning the table into a disaster film.

If the card is uncomfortable, that does not mean you should panic. It means you should look. Light and shadow will help. So will this question: am I seeing what is here, or am I seeing what I am afraid of?

The cards people flinch at

Death. The Tower. Three of Swords. Ten of Swords. The Devil. People arrive at these with a film already playing. The film is not intuition. The film is folklore and bad television.

Death can be an honest ending that needed to happen. The Tower can be the relief of a structure that was already false. Three of Swords can be the first true sentence in months. None of that is small. None of that is a curse landing on the table.

Fear reads the title and stops. Intuition stays with the image. Stay with the image.

Check the body, then check the story

Fear in the body is often loud, high, and busy. Breath up in the throat. Mind already three disasters ahead. A need to do something immediately.

A clean no can live in the same neighbourhood of the body and still feel different. Less plot. Less speed. More of a simple closed door.

You will only learn your difference by recording both. Do not decide in advance that every tight chest is a prophecy. Do not decide that every tight chest is only anxiety either. Look. Write. Test.

Activity

Name the film

Think of a card or a number that scares you. Write the film your fear puts on. Then look at the actual image, or the actual situation. What is on the card that is not in the film? What is in the film that is not on the card?

Practice

Sit with a difficult card

Choose a card you flinch at. One card spread. Write the fear version in one line. Then look at the image for a full minute and write what is actually there. Then write a light expression and a shadow expression. Notice which one your fear was already committed to before you looked.

Open the practice

Reflection

Whose fear are you still carrying at the table? A parent’s, a teacher’s, a film’s, or your own unfinished story?
