Lesson 01
The Fool as zero
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
The Major Arcana begins with The Fool, numbered zero. That is not a cute quirk. It is the reason the sequence can move at all.
Readers have long used this sequence as a map. I am teaching you that map as established tarot pedagogy, so you can understand why the twenty-two Majors sit in an order, and why zero is the only honest place to start.

The Fool
Major · 0
Zero is not empty
Zero is not nothing in the insulting sense. Zero is unformed potential. No role yet. No rank. No lesson completed. The Fool has not taken on Magician, or Priestess, or Empire, or grief. That is why he can walk into all of them.
If the sequence began at one, you would already be someone. A Magician has tools. A Priestess has an inner door. The Fool has a step. That is a different kind of beginning.
In a lot of decks he is at the edge of something. A cliff, a road, a dog at his heels, a small pack, his face turned toward weather he has not met. He is not stupid. He is uncommitted to a finished self. That is why teachers put him at the front of the Majors, and why some readers also let him wander through the whole deck as the one who is having the experience.
Why he begins
Every other Major is a station. The Magician is a way of using will. The Tower is a way a structure falls. The World is a way a cycle completes. The Fool is the one who can arrive at a station without already being it.
That is pedagogically useful. When you study the Majors as a sequence, you need a traveler. Zero gives you one. Not a hero with a destiny painted on his back. A person, or a part of a person, willing to enter experience before they can name it.
You will still learn The Fool as its own card later, with traditional meaning, image, light and shadow. Here I need you to understand his job in the map. He is the openness the rest of the sequence acts upon.
Zero when it lands on the table
When The Fool appears in a spread, students often rush to leap, new beginning, innocence. Sometimes that is fair. Traditional notes will back you.
The sequence gives you more. Zero can mean the querent is not yet in the lesson of the cards around them. They have not become the Emperor of this situation. They have not yet paid the Devil's price. They are at the door. That is information. It is not a command to quit their job and buy a rucksack.
Activity
Write zero before you romanticise it
Without looking anything up, write what zero means in ordinary life. Bank balance. A blank page. The first day of a job before you have a role. Then look at The Fool and write what kind of zero this image is. Not a caption. A quality.
Practice
Fool beside Magician
Place The Fool next to The Magician. What does the Magician have that the Fool does not? Tools, stance, a table, a sense of I can. Write five honest differences. This is why the sequence cannot start at one. One is already equipped.
