Part 04
Three
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
What this quality is
Three is expression. The first harvest of one-plus-two. Something has become visible. A result. A gathering. A triangle of forces. A third person, a third truth, a third cup on the table.
People love to say three equals creativity. Sometimes it does. In Swords it can be a sharp truth made public. In Pentacles it can be a job done with other hands. Do not tattoo creativity on this number and stop looking.
Why it matters
One is a spark. Two is a relationship. Three is what that relationship makes, or what interrupts it. If you cannot read three, you will miss the moment a private thing becomes a life.
Three also teaches you that a first harvest is not the whole crop. It is early fruit. Celebrate it or grieve it, but do not call it the end.
How to recognise it
Three figures. Three objects. A triangle. A crowd that is still small. Work being shown. Pain being shown. Ships on a horizon as the result of a plan. Look at how the three things are arranged. A triangle is different from three in a line. Three raised together is different from three stabbed through one heart.
How it changes by suit
Three of Wands: the first harvest of action looking outward. A figure, a vantage, ships. Fire that has sent something into the world and is watching.
Three of Cups: feeling made communal. Three figures, fruit, raised cups. Water as gathering. Joy, sisterhood, a rite. Or a party that will not look at what is missing.
Three of Swords: expression as pain made visible. Rain. Heart. Three blades. Air that will not stay polite. A truth that has landed in the body.
Three of Pentacles: expression as craft in company. Three people, a plan, a building. Earth that needs other hands. Skill shown, not hidden.
Light
Honest expression. Collaboration. The first real result. Celebration that is earned. A truth spoken. Work that can be seen. Life becoming more than a private wish.
Shadow
Triangulation. A third used to avoid the two. Oversharing. Premature harvest. Performing the gathering. Rehearsing the wound so it stays on display. Seeking applause for work that is not yet true.
Three swords is not three cups
We will do this properly in When numbers meet tarot. For now, hold this: three is the number of something shown. Whether what is shown is grief, joy, vision, or craft is the suit and the picture. Never the number alone.

Practice
Count, then look
Take the Three of Swords, Three of Cups, Three of Wands, and Three of Pentacles. For each card write: what is being expressed, who is in the room, what the first harvest actually is. Then write one sentence that would be a lie if you swapped the suits. Keep those sentences. You will need them.
