Numbers within tarot

Ace. The seed. The pure gift of the suit, unformed. A beginning that has not yet chosen a shape. One of something, offered.

Two. The first meeting. Duality, choice, relationship, a pair. The seed has met an other.

Three. The first thing made from that meeting. Expression, a crowd of three, the work leaving the pair and entering the world.

Four. Structure. A pause. Stability, or a box. The thing has walls now.

Five. Disruption. The thing the four did not plan for. Conflict, loss, a challenge to the structure. Not automatically chaos. A fifth arriving.

Six. Finding a way after disruption. Offering, recovery, a story you tell to move again. Harmony that has a memory of the five.

Seven. Assessment. Waiting. Inner testing of the suit. A pause that is not the four's rest. What have you got, and is it true?

Eight. The engine of the suit. Mastery in motion, or grind. Power in a tight space. Repetition that builds skill or a mill.

Nine. Fullness. Almost complete. Intensity. The suit at high tide. Almost can be beautiful. Almost can be exhausting.

Ten. The cycle's harvest, or its overload. Completion that asks what next. Too much of the suit, or enough, or a finished form that will have to be put down.

A Three is not a Nine. You can feel that even if you have never read a numerology book. Three of something is a different quantity of life than nine of something.

Do not lock Ace equals beginning and Ten equals completion as if the universe issued a memo. Sometimes a Ten feels like a harvest. Sometimes it feels like too much. Context decides. The picture decides. The question decides. The progression is a map, like the Fool's Story is a map. Use it. Do not glue it over the card.

Look at the four Aces. Same number. Four climates.

Ace of Wands. A hand offers a staff. Leaves sprout. A landscape waits. This is the seed of fire: a spark of action, desire, creative heat, the will to start. Not a plan yet. A live stick.

Ace of Cups. A cup overflows. Water, a dove, a pool, a hand from a cloud. This is the seed of water: the first opening of feeling, love, inner life, a gift of the heart that has not yet become a relationship story.

Ace of Swords. A blade upright. A crown, mountains, air. This is the seed of air: the first cut of thought, a truth, a decision that clears, language with an edge. One idea that could change the room.

Ace of Pentacles. A coin over a garden. A gate, a path, a hedge. This is the seed of earth: a material opportunity, a chance you can hold, a beginning in work, money, body, or home. A seed that wants soil, not a speech.

If you only knew Ace equals new beginning, you would read four different cards as the same caption. The number gives you seed. The suit gives you which life the seed is in. The image tells you how this seed looks. That is the skill.
