Course/The Seventy-Eight Cards
Lesson 07
Putting the deck together
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
Number plus suit plus image. That is the engine for a card you have not memorised.
You have the architecture. You have the road of the Majors. You have sat with suits. Now I want you able to reconstruct meaning from structure when the caption will not come.
How to meet an unread card
Is it a Major or a Minor? If it is a Major, you have archetype and neighbourhood. Where does it sit on the road? What is the traditional weather you remember, even roughly? What is the picture doing?
If it is a Minor, name the suit and the element. Name the number or the court rank. Remember the stage of the Ace-to-Ten story, or the stance of the court. Then look at this picture. Reconstruct: this is the disruption stage of air, or this is fire in pursuit, or this is the seed of earth. Then let the image correct you.
You will still forget cards. Good readers forget cards. The difference is they have a way in that is not panic and a search engine.
The image is allowed to argue with the grammar
Grammar gets you to the door. The picture is the room. The Six of Swords is often a moving-on in air, a passage. If your deck's image is brutal rather than quiet, believe the picture. Structure said passage. The image told you what kind.
That is why this is not a substitute for looking. It is what you do so looking has somewhere to stand. The next module trains the eyes properly. Do not skip it because you can now reconstruct a Five.
Worked example. A Seven you have not drilled.
You turn over the Seven of Pentacles. You blank on the book meaning.
Minor. Pentacles: earth, work, crop, time. Seven: assessment, waiting, inner testing, what have you got and is it true? Image: a figure looking at a bush of coins, pausing, not harvesting yet.
Reconstructed: a pause in earth to assess the crop. Traditional notes will back you: patience, evaluation, delayed harvest, wondering if the work is worth it. You got there without a caption. Then you look up the library and see what you missed. That last step is research, not a rescue.
Practice
Pull unknown cards. Reconstruct.
Shuffle. Draw three cards you have not studied this week. For each, write only: Major or Minor. Suit and element, or Major neighbourhood. Number or rank. One sentence reconstructed from that. One sentence from the image. Do not open a book until all three are done. Then check the Tarot Library. Note what the structure got right, and what only the picture knew.
Open the practiceActivity
Rescue a card you always blank on
Name the card you consistently cannot remember. Run the engine on it now, from structure, without looking it up. Then look it up. Keep the page. This is the card that will teach you whether the engine works.
