The Magician

Traditionally, The Magician is skill, will, concentration, the ability to make something happen. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching he has all four suit tools on the table: wand, cup, sword, pentacle. Heaven above, earth below, the infinity over his head. Waite's Magician is the adept who can channel.

The traditional note is: you have the tools. Now use them. Manifestation, communication, craft, the first real act after The Fool's open step. Keep that. Then look. A table of tools is not automatically mastery. It can be a performance of mastery. The garden and the pointing hands will tell you which.

One. The spark. The will. After zero, someone picks up a wand. The Magician is the first formed self in the sequence: not wandering, standing. The High Priestess is next, and she will take you behind a veil. He is the outer act. She is the inner door. Learn them as a pair even while you study this card alone.

Look at the table. All four suits are there. Which one is his right hand using? The wand is raised. The others wait. Why raise fire first?

One arm up, one down. As above, so below, as the old phrase has it. Is this communion, or a pose? Look at the roses and lilies in the garden. Look at the snake belt, the infinity, the red robe over white. Where does your eye land first: the wand, the table, the garden, the face?

Four tools on one table is a claim: I can work in every field of life. Investigate whether that is true in this question, or whether one tool is gathering dust.

The infinity is consciousness that does not snap. The garden is already growing. This Magician is not in a wasteland. Ask what has already been cultivated, and what he is about to start.

Red robe, white under-robe, yellow background, roses. The red is doing will and body. The white is the inner layer. If the yellow feels like confidence, keep it. If it feels like a stage set, keep that.

One is initiation, focus, the self beginning. Light: a clean act. Shadow: making everything about you, or refusing to put the wand down.

A common correspondence is Mercury. Messenger, maker, talker, trickster. Use it when this Magician is actually about communication, craft, or cleverness. If the card is simply will, you do not need the planet.

Active. Directed. A current running from sky through a body into a table. Not The Fool's off-balance step. A stance.

Light. Skill used on purpose. Tools on the table, attention in the hands, a first real act.

Shadow. Performance of power. Talking as if the work is done. Using every tool so you never commit to one.

Starting the business, writing the message, picking up the instrument, saying the thing with your whole body in it.

It can be a person who can do many things and will not choose. It can be a week where you finally have what you need and you are still pointing at the sky instead of the work.

As advice: use what is already on your table. As a problem: all show. Next to The Fool, the tools have arrived. Next to The High Priestess, the outer act may be skipping the inner knowing. Next to the Four of Pentacles, skill may be hoarded.
