The Hierophant

Traditionally, The Hierophant is tradition, teaching, shared belief, the institution, the blessing of a path that already exists. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching he sits between pillars, two acolytes at his feet, crossed keys, a triple crown, a blessing hand, stone church around him. Waite's Hierophant is the outer religion to The High Priestess's inner one.

The traditional note is: education, marriage as a rite, a teacher, a doctrine, doing it the received way. Keep that. Then look. A blessing can be a gift. It can be a collar. The keys and the two kneeling figures will tell you which.

Five. Something entering the four's order. After The Emperor's personal law, inherited law. The Lovers come next: a choice that will not be made only by a church. Number five here is the human inside the institution, the two students, the question of who gets to interpret the keys.

Look at the two acolytes. They are not the same. Different robes, different roses or lilies. Why two, and why at his feet rather than beside him?

The crossed keys at his feet are gold and silver on many printings. The triple crown. The three bars of the staff. He blesses with two fingers up, two down. The floor is patterned. This is a designed room. Who designed it, and are you allowed to rearrange the furniture?

Keys are access. Crossed, they can open or they can say not yet. Investigate whether this is initiation or gatekeeping.

Two students is a lineage: someone is learning. Ask whether you are the teacher, the student, or the one still standing at the back of the hall.

Red, gold, stone grey, the white of the papal garment. Formal colour. If it feels like warmth of belonging, keep it. If it feels like a uniform, keep that.

Five as the human entering the plan. Here the five is the student body, the disruption of a private Emperor by a shared teaching. Light: a good teacher. Shadow: a system that will not let you think.

A common correspondence is Taurus. Value, the slow, the kept, the rite that repeats. Use it if this Hierophant actually feels like a stable tradition. If he is simply a teacher, you may not need the bull.

Formal. Vertical like The Emperor, but the authority is inherited, not only personal. A channel. Can feel like belonging. Can feel like being spoken through.

Light. A worthy teacher. A rite that holds you. Learning a craft the long way. Shared meaning.

Shadow. Dogma. Borrowed certainty. Kneeling because you are afraid to stand. A key you are not allowed to hold.

School, church, professional qualification, the family religion, the way we do things here, a counsellor, a course, a marriage blessing.

It can be you becoming the teacher. It can be the week you need a map someone else already walked. It can be the group that will exile you for a question.

As advice: find a teacher, honour the craft. As a problem: you are outsourcing your knowing. Next to The High Priestess, inner and outer teaching want a conversation. Next to The Lovers, the rite meets a personal choice. Next to The Devil, tradition may have become a chain.
