The Lovers

Traditionally, The Lovers is union, choice, love, alignment of values, a significant relationship or a significant fork. In Rider-Waite-Smith teaching an angel above a naked man and woman, a tree of knowledge with a snake, a flaming tree, a mountain. Waite's Lovers is not only a wedding. It is a decision made in the presence of something larger.

The traditional note is: love, partnership, a choice that matters, integrity. Keep that. Then look. Two people under an angel is not automatically romance. It can be a values clash, a temptation, a joining, a split. The trees and the snake will tell you which.

Six. After the Hierophant's received way, a personal choosing. The Chariot is next: the choice will have to move. Number six here is harmony, responsibility, the work of two. Behind them, five was the school. Ahead, seven is the will on the road.

Look at who faces whom. The woman looks up at the angel. The man looks at the woman. A chain of attention. Why does he not look at the angel himself?

Behind her, a fruit tree and a snake. Behind him, a tree in flames, twelve flames on many printings. Between them, the angel in a sunburst. Cloud. A peak. They are naked. No Hierophant robe. What has been taken off so this choice can be seen?

The snake and the fruit tree are knowledge, desire, the cost of knowing. Investigate whether this is temptation or the beginning of adult choice.

The flaming tree behind the man is often read as passion or as the twelve. Ask what burns when he looks at her instead of at the sky. The angel is a third. A choice that is not only two people.

Gold sun, orange fire, green tree, blue mountain, pale bodies. If the gold feels like blessing, keep it. If it feels like exposure, two people with nowhere to hide, keep that.

Six as adjustment, care, harmony, sometimes a story we tell to make peace. Here the six is a union that still has a snake in the tree. Light: true choosing. Shadow: calling it love so you do not have to choose.

A common correspondence is Gemini. Duality, the pair, the conversation, the fork in the road. That is why this card is not only a couple in a clinch. Use Gemini if the question is actually two paths, two voices, two truths. If it is simply devotion, you may not need the twins.

A tension that wants resolution. Magnetic. Vertical, because of the angel, and horizontal, because of the two. Not settled like a Ten of Cups household. A moment of choosing.

Light. A clean yes to another, or to a value. Standing naked in the choice. Alignment.

Shadow. Choosing the person instead of the truth. Or refusing to choose and calling it romance. Letting the snake do the talking.

A relationship, a contract, a fork between two lives, the moment you admit what you want, the moment you admit the cost.

It can be ethics at work. It can be coming out. It can be the week you stop letting an institution choose for you.

As outcome: union, or a choice made. As advice: choose with your whole self. As a problem: a triangle, a split, a temptation. Next to The Hierophant, personal choice meets the received way.
