Course/The Seventy-Eight Cards/Wands

Part 13

Queen of Wands

Traditional foundation, then looking.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

Queen of Wands

Queen of Wands

Queen

Traditional foundation

Traditionally the Queen of Wands is a woman of fire: confident, magnetic, whole-hearted, sometimes jealous, a person who can run a house and a flame. Old books talk about a dark queen, a country woman of strength, love of the home that is also love of power, succour and opposition.

Take the foundation. Put down the idea that Queens equal feminine and Kings equal masculine, as if fire had genders you could iron. This Queen is a stage of fire: heat that has become climate. Presence. Warmth that can stay in a room and run a life. Anyone can sit this throne. The black cat does not check your pronouns.

Where it sits in the deck

Page discovered fire. Knight spent it on a horse. Queen is fire that knows how to host itself. Developmental stage: radiance with roots. The will that warms rather than only charges. Not 'the woman of the suit.' The maturity where Wands can be a hearth and a spine at once.

She can arrive as a person, a part of you, a way of doing the thing you asked about, an energy to grow into, or a shadow of pride and scorched earth. Context decides. Compare the King, who directs fire as vision over a longer haul. The Queen is the one whose heat you feel when you enter the room. Different job. Same element.

Look at this image

A figure sits on a throne decorated with lions, a sunflower in the left hand, a wand in the right, crown of gold and leaves, yellow all through the card. At her feet a black cat sits and looks straight at you. The Queen does not need to charge. The gaze is confident, slightly aside, as if she can see you and the desert at once.

Sunflowers grow on the back of the throne as well as in the hand. Lions in the arms of the seat, more lions in the dry land behind. This is not a secret garden. It is a seat in open heat, animals included, vegetation that turns with the sun.

Notice she is seated and still armed with a wand. Motion is not the only mature fire. Notice the cat is the only creature looking fully out of the card. A familiar, a shadow, a boundary with fur. What did you see first: the sunflower, the cat, the lions, or that unbothered face?

Symbols worth investigating

The sunflower is not a cute extra. It is a plant that tracks heat. Traditional solar language, loyalty to the light, a public flower, a spine that turns toward what feeds it. In a reading, ask what this Queen is turned toward. If the sunflower drooped, we would have a different woman. It does not.

The black cat: witches' familiar in old fear, independence, the part of fire that will not perform, a small dark animal on a loud gold card. Cats choose. They also leave. I will not give you a single meaning. I will ask why a Queen of Wands needs a creature at her feet who looks at the querent as if to say I see you too. Protection, instinct, unbought honesty. Investigate.

Lions on the throne: fire's animal, courage, pride, the same beast that shows up with Strength in the Majors. Here they are furniture and landscape, contained enough to sit on, still wild in the distance. Mature fire does not mean dead fire. It means you can have lions and not be eaten every afternoon.

Colour in this card

Gold and sunflower yellow, then that black cat as a hole in the sun. The colour sentence is warmth plus a dark punctuation. If you skip the cat you have a poster. If you skip the gold you have only suspicion.

Yellow here is inhabited, not the Ace's pale sky. Someone lives in this heat. The green of the sunflower leaves is life attached to the throne, not falling off a gifted stick. If the black is what you love, you may be reading the Queen's instinct before her charisma. That is a valid door into the card. Stay honest about which door you used.

Number

Queens are the third court stage in the sequence I am teaching for fire: after discovery and pursuit, presence. Not a pip number. A seated three, if you need a hook: life that has gathered enough to hold court.

You can feel a four in her too, the ability to make a place, and a six in the ease of being seen. Do not turn that into a maths problem. Let the stage be: fire that can stay.

An astrological layer

Traditionally some schools call the Queen water of fire: heat that can feel, host, magnetise, the steam that makes a room, passion with a tide. Others give her a slice of Aries weather, first-fire on a throne. Old notes. Use what adds a quality.

Water-of-fire is the most useful extra if you let it be: this is not the Knight's dry charge. There is reception in the way she holds the sunflower. Warmth that can take you in. The shadow of that is engulfing, jealousy, heat that wants to own the room. If you were about to say 'she's fiery' and stop, the water note is a correction. Stay with it or leave the stars.

What is this card doing?

Warm, seated, radiant, self-possessed. Expansion as a climate, not a gallop. Active without chasing. The energy is in the spine and the face and the space around the throne. People sit up. Cats choose the chair.

It can feel like coming home to yourself. It can feel like being looked at by someone who knows their effect. If you shrink in front of this card, that is information about your own fire, not a defect in the Queen. If you puff up, check for costume.

Light and shadow

Light. Heat you can live in. Confidence that makes other people's sparks braver, a will that does not need to chase, a room that is warm because someone honest is sitting in it.

Shadow. Vanity, jealousy, the sunflower that must be the only sunflower. Using warmth as a leash. Scorched earth when pride is bruised. Or the opposite distortion: dimming this Queen in yourself because being magnetic felt dangerous, until the cat leaves and the throne is a chair you apologise for.

How this can show up

The friend whose kitchen is a hearth and whose no is a clean wand. The director who walks in and a crew gets braver. You on a day you did not shrink.

Sexual confidence that is not a performance, creative authority that does not need a horse, a parent, a host, a maker who is the climate of their studio.

A person of any gender who runs on self-possessed fire. If you only ever read this as 'a woman,' you will miss the men, the non-binary folk, and the part of you that is this Queen when the Knight finally gets off the horse.

Shadow in life: the charming tyrant of a group chat, the artist who cannot bear another person's success, the smile that is a lion.

Same card, different reading

As advice: occupy the throne. Be the climate. Stop charging long enough to be felt. As challenge: pride, jealousy, or a refusal of your own heat. As a person: whoever is holding the social fire of the situation, for good or for scorched paws.

In love this can be a partner who knows their worth, a you who stops begging, chemistry with backbone. It can also be a relationship that is all throne and no tenderness. Surrounding Cups will say if water is actually in the fire.

Beside the Knight, a request to mature the pace. Beside the King, a conversation about radiance versus direction: who is the room, who is the vision. Beside the Page, mentorship or a Queen who forgot how to let anyone else be new. Look, then decide.

Activity

Describe before you interpret

Cover the traditional notes above. Look at the image. Write only what you see. People, objects, weather, direction, colour, what is missing. No meaning yet.

Activity

Ask the card

What is the cat doing in this reading, and what instinct have you parked at your own feet? Where are you still charging like a Knight when the work is to sit and radiate? Is this Queen a person, a part of you, or a climate you are scared to become? When your pride is bruised, what does your fire do to the room?

Practice

Practise this card

Sit down. That is not a joke. The Queen of Wands is a seated fire. Put a sunflower, a houseplant, or anything that turns toward light where you can see it. Look at the card, then at the black cat, then back. Write what your face does when you try on this gaze for one minute, and where in your life you already run a climate without calling it that. No flattery. Then read the traditional queen-of-fire note and keep only what is true.
