Course/Universal Laws/The laws in this training

Part 04

The Law of Cause and Effect

Actions have consequences. So do avoided actions. This is not a stick called karma.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

The principle

Cause and effect is an established principle in philosophy and in spiritual teaching: what is set in motion tends to have a result. Karma, in popular talk, is often this law with extra costume. I did not invent it. I will not use it to sentence people.

In a reading it often looks like: you are standing in a result. What was the move that built it? What move is available now?

Why it matters

Because tarot can become fortune telling that pretends nothing you do matters, or a pep talk that pretends everything is a vibe. Cause and effect brings the hands back into the room.

Because avoided action is also a cause. Not choosing is a choice with a harvest.

In everyday life

You send the message. Something answers. You do not send it. A different something happens, including nothing. You practise. Skill arrives. You borrow. Debt arrives. Simple, until we start moralising it.

Light

Agency. Honesty about results. Repair. Planting what you actually want to harvest. Reading a spread as a chain you can still touch.

Shadow

Distortion: using karma as a stick. You must have done something in a past life. You deserve this. I will not teach that. Also: reducing every mystery to a simple cause so you can feel in control. Some effects have many parents. Some causes are not visible. Stay humble.

How it is misunderstood

Karma as punishment. Cosmic revenge. The idea that suffering always proves a lesson you earned. That is cruelty with incense.

The other side: refusing any responsibility because the universe is mysterious. Mystery is real. So is the email you have not sent.

How it can appear in tarot

Justice. Wheel of Fortune. Seven of Pentacles. Ten of Wands as a result of saying yes too many times. Three of Swords as a result of a truth, or of a cut. Ask: what cause is already on the table? What effect is being shown? What is still choosable?

Justice as a scale, not a gavel

Sword and scales. Traditional fairness, truth, consequence. Light: a clean accounting. Shadow: using the card to play judge. The law of cause and effect, used well, says: this is a result, and results can be met with honesty. Used badly, it says: you had it coming. Do not read the second.

Practice

Result, cause, next move

Name a current result in your life. Pull three cards: what helped cause this, what this result is asking, what next cause I can actually set. Write in ordinary language. If a card tempts you toward cosmic punishment, put it down and write the human version.

Reflection

Where do you treat consequence as proof that someone, including you, is a bad person?
