Part 05

The Law of Correspondence

As within, so without. Pattern repeating at different scales. Sometimes. Not always.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

The principle

Correspondence is a classic Hermetic idea: as above, so below. As within, so without. Patterns repeat at different scales. The inner weather shows up as outer weather, sometimes. I did not invent this. It is one of the oldest lenses in western esoteric teaching.

In this school it invites a question: where does this image already live in the person's actual week? It does not force a match.

Why it matters

Because tarot is already a correspondence engine. Pictures standing for lives. If you understand the law, you use the picture as a mirror without insisting every cup is their mother.

Because it trains you to look for rhyme: card to life, card to card, body to spread, number to situation. Rhyme is useful. Forced rhyme is poetry homework.

In everyday life

A messy desk and a messy calendar. A clenched jaw and a clenched yes. A house that looks like the relationship. Not always. Often enough to be worth a look. Then you still have to ask, not assume.

Light

Seeing pattern without superstition. Using the card as a useful mirror. Letting inner work and outer work talk to each other. As in the spread, so in the Tuesday, when that is true.

Shadow

Distortion: forcing every outer event to be a spiritual assignment. Deciding everyone else is just your mirror so you never have to hear that they have their own life. Magical thinking that replaces practical seeing.

How it is misunderstood

As above, so below is not: everything is my manifestation. It is: look for the rhyme, then test it. Sometimes a card is about the other person. Sometimes it is about a job. Sometimes a headache is a headache.

How it can appear in tarot

The High Priestess as inner/outer veil. The Moon as inner image leaking into night. A pentacle spread that looks like the person's actual house. Ask: where is this already happening? If you cannot find it in the life, do not invent it to honour the law.

The Moon, inner weather, outer night

Dogs, crayfish, a path, a moon. Correspondence might ask: what inner unknown is walking around in daylight as confusion, fear, or a story you cannot quite see? Useful. If you then tell someone their colleague is a psychic attack because of the dog, you have left the law and entered a film. Come back.

Practice

Find the rhyme, or don't

Pull one card for today. Write the image. Then walk your actual day in your mind: home, body, messages, mood. Where does the image already live? If nowhere, write nowhere. That is a clean use of correspondence. Forcing a match is not.

Reflection

When have you decided someone else was only a mirror, so you did not have to take their no seriously?
