Elements

Fire: heat, appetite, will, spirit, the spark that wants to move. Earth: body, time, money, craft, what lasts. Air: mind, word, truth, distance, the cut of thought. Water: feeling, bond, dream, memory, the tide.

A common map for Rider-Waite-Smith decks is fire to Wands, water to Cups, air to Swords, earth to Pentacles. It is a widely used teaching map. It is not the only map in tarot history. If a Cups card is full of dry earth and no feeling, believe the picture.

When a spread is all one element, that is the field. When elements clash, that clash is the reading. You can often see this without a correspondence table. Actual flame, actual water, actual sky, actual ground.

Look at the suit, then look at what is drawn. Fire leans forward. Earth has weight. Air has space and blades. Water shows weather on a face. A table of Cups next to one Sword will hum differently from a table of Pentacles.

Name the climate in ordinary words. This wants heat. This wants to land in the body. This is a mind weather. This is a tide. If the elemental language helps you say that, keep it. If it makes you lecture, drop it. The image still leads.

You feel the weather and work with it. Fire that does a job. Earth that holds. Air that clarifies. Water that can move.

Forcing a suit rule onto a picture that is doing something else. Treating water as always kind and air as always cruel. Using element as trivia so you do not have to look.

Ace of Pentacles, Eight of Pentacles, Six of Wands. Earth, earth, then fire. You may say: this wants to land in the real world, and then be seen. Element helped. If you then drag a sign onto every card because you once saw a chart, you have left the reading.
