Modalities

Cardinal, fixed, mutable. How a thing starts, holds, and changes. Look at the actual weather in the picture.

Modalities tell you how energy moves. Start, hold, or change. Together with element they are one of the most useful bits of astrological thinking for tarot.

What this is

Cardinal starts. Initiates. The first push. Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn in the sign list. In a card, look for a beginning, a claim, a move into the room.

Fixed holds. Sustains. Will not be easily moved. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. In a card, look for staying power, stubbornness, a centre that will not yield, devotion, a box.

Mutable changes, adapts, scatters. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. In a card, look for transition, many options, a figure in between, a skill of adjusting.

Why it matters

You can feel whether a table wants a start, a stand, or a change. That is already a reading. Modality is a way to name it. It is not a reason to glue cardinal onto every Ace and call it the Method.

How to recognise it

Aces and many beginnings can hum cardinal. Fours, and any card that will not budge, can hum fixed. Threes, and any card that is in transit, can hum mutable. Some schools map modalities onto number groups. That can be a thought experiment. It is not a law. If the image is stuck, it is not cardinal just because a chart said so.

How to use it

Name the move in ordinary words. This spread wants a beginning. This spread is stuck on purpose. This spread is in motion and will not be nailed down. Leave the Latin if it does not add.

Light

Working with the way the energy actually moves. Starting when a start is here. Holding when holding is devotion. Changing when the season has turned.

Shadow

Forcing a start on a fixed spread. Demanding certainty from a mutable one. Using modality as a sticker so you can skip the body of the figure.

Example

The Emperor is often linked with Aries: cardinal fire. If that helps you feel initiating heat, use it. The image may also be very earthy: structure, time, a stone seat. If this Emperor, in this question, is exhausted structure rather than initiating fire, say that. The modality on a list does not get a veto.

Practice

Start, hold, or change

Pull three cards. For each, write whether it feels like it is starting, holding, or changing, and point to why in the image. If a sign modality you already know agrees, note it. If it argues, believe the picture.

Reflection

Do you force a start on tables that want to hold, or demand a stand from a spread that is clearly in transit?
