The Law of Compensation
The principle
The Law of Compensation is an established spiritual principle: energy given and energy received tend, over time, toward a kind of accounting. Give, receive, exchange. I did not invent this. I will not teach it as the universe owes you a prize for being good.
In this school it is a reflective question: does the effort I am putting in, and what I am receiving, feel aligned? If not, that is information. It is not a verdict that you have been cheated by the sky.
Why it matters
This school uses it because readers and querents both get stuck in one-way streets. Overgiving. Under-receiving. Taking without contributing. Waiting for a harvest they never planted. Compensation puts the scales on the table without turning you into a debt collector.
It also stops the spiritual version of a vending machine: I visualised, therefore I am owed. Contribution is not a coin you put in. It is a relationship with life.
In everyday life
You keep showing up for a friendship that never shows up for you. You do the unpaid labour at work and call it loyalty. You receive help and cannot take it in. You want a skill and will not practise. Compensation is already in the week. Name it before you spiritualise it.
How to work with it
Look at one area of life: work, love, friendship, this training. Write what you give. Write what comes back. Write whether those feel in proportion. Do not cook the books to make yourself a martyr or a saint.
If the scales are off, ask what a human-sized adjustment would be. Ask for help. Stop doing the extra. Practise the craft. Receive the cup. Compensation is not a tantrum at the universe. It is an honest review.
Light
Fair exchange. Knowing your worth without a speech. Receiving without apology. Giving without disappearing. Letting a harvest take the time it takes, once the planting was real.
Shadow
Distortion: keeping score like a solicitor. I did this, so I am owed that, and I will punish the delay. Also: staying in a draining pattern because one day it will pay off spiritually. Also: using this law to shame someone for being in a hard season. A winter is not proof they failed to contribute.
How it is misunderstood
Do X and the universe owes you Y. That is not the law. That is a toddler with a loyalty card.
The other twist: if I am struggling, I must not have given enough. Poverty, illness, grief. I will not have that. Compensation is a review of exchange. It is not a moral exam you failed.
How it can appear in tarot
Six of Pentacles: give and receive, and who is holding the scale. Seven of Pentacles: effort already given, harvest not yet. Five of Pentacles: outside the window, and whether help is actually being asked for. Ten of Wands: contribution that has become a load.
Ask: what is being given here, what is coming back, and does that feel honest? Then ask what is outside the person's control so you do not turn a hard season into a lecture.
Seven of Pentacles, the wait after the work
A figure leans on a hoe and looks at the plant. Traditional: patience, assessment, work already done. Light of compensation: you planted, now let it be a plant. Shadow: staring at the soil as if staring were more labour, or deciding the harvest is late because you are unworthy.
Used cleanly, the law says: review the exchange. You have given. Receiving may still be on its way, or the crop may need a different tending, or this field may be finished. Used badly, it says the universe is in arrears. Do not read the second.

Practice
Give, receive, adjust
Choose one area of life. Write two lists: what I give, what I receive. Pull one card for the exchange. Read it as a review, not a prize or a punishment. Then write one human-sized adjustment you could make this week, including receiving something you have been refusing.
