Nine of Cups

Traditionally the Nine of Cups is the wish card. Satisfaction, pleasure, plenty, hospitality, getting what you asked for. A man with a feast of cups behind him. Keep that. It is one of the most popular traditional notes in the minors.

Traditionally it is also smugness, overindulgence, satisfaction that is personal rather than shared. Nine is a lot of water in one person's hall. Learn the wish. Then look at the crossed arms and who is not invited to the bar.

A well-fed man sits on a wooden bench, facing you, arms folded, a small smile, a red cap, a cream robe. He looks pleased with himself, or at least finished. You are being shown someone who has arrived at enough, or at the performance of enough.

Behind him, nine gold cups stand in an arc on a draped platform, like bottles on a bar, like trophies, like a collection. He is not drinking. He is sitting in front of his cups. Display is part of the picture. Ask whether this is hospitality waiting to happen, or a hoard arranged for an audience of one.

The arms are crossed, as they were in the Four, and the mood could not be more different. Same gesture, different weather. In the Four the fold was refusal. Here it can be contentment, pride, a closed gate on a full stomach. Do not copy a meaning from one folded-arm card onto the other.

There is no other person. There is no garden dance, no child, no rainbow, no dove. The wish is personal. If your question was about a family, notice that this fulfilment is a solo portrait.

Traditionally this is Jupiter in Pisces. Jupiter as plenty, luck, the big yes. Pisces as boundless water. If that adds a climate, this is a generous sea inside one room, a wish with no obvious lid.

Jupiter can overdo. Pisces can dissolve. Together they can be bliss or bloat. If you do not work with Jupiter, the nine cups on the bar will still show you plenty. Do not fetch a planet to prove a feast.

This card is sitting. Satisfied. Slightly proud. The energy is a full belly of feeling, a pause that is not the Four's fog. It has got somewhere.
