Course/Astrology and Tarot/The planets, one by one

Part 02

The Moon

Feeling, reflection, cycles, the hidden. Inner weather.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

What this planet is

The Moon, in this old language, is inner weather. Feeling. Reflection. Cycles. The hidden. The body clock. What is true at night that daylight would argue with. Not a spooky accessory. A living quality: something is moving under the surface, and it has a tide.

You already know this. A mood that arrives before a reason. A dream that will not leave. A month that has a shape. The need to withdraw. The need to be held. Fog. A face in the dark that is still a face.

Why it matters for a reader

A lot of readings are lunar whether you name the Moon or not. Grief, instinct, the unsaid, the body, the thing a person knows and cannot prove. If you skip this quality, you will over-explain feeling, or treat it as a problem to be solved with a sword.

It also trains you not to worship fog. The Moon can be true inner weather. It can also be a refusal to look. A reader has to tell the difference.

How to recognise it

In life: night, water, sleep, cycles, a pull you cannot quite name, memory, mothering, the wish to hide, the gift of sensing a room. Also: mood as the only map. Waiting for a sign instead of asking a person.

In a card: moons, night, dogs, water, crayfish, paths, veils, pillars, a figure who is not facing you, silver, tide, a face reflected. Also: two of something that will not resolve. A feeling that is doing more work than a fact.

Light

True inner weather. Instinct that has been listened to. Compassion. Rhythm. The ability to sit with what is not finished. Memory used as wisdom, not as a trap. A no that comes from the body and is clean.

Shadow

Fog. Mood as the only map. Projection. Night fears treated as prophecy. Avoidance dressed as mystery. Overexpression: drowning in feeling and calling it depth. Under-expression: numbing the tide so nothing can move you.

How it can deepen a card

When a card is already talking about the hidden, the cyclic, or what is felt before it is named, the Moon can give you a word for the climate. Cups often visit. So does any night road.

A common teaching map gives the Moon planet to The High Priestess: tide, veil, the knowing that is not daylight. Another common map sits The Moon card with Pisces. I am sitting with The Moon as a lunar picture you can actually see: dogs, crayfish, a path between towers, a face in the night. Shared image. That is why the link is worth a sentence. If the High Priestess is the better fit in a spread, use her. Shared quality, not a monopoly.

When to leave it alone

Leave it when you are using the Moon to sound mysterious. Leave it when the card is a simple delay, a job, a conversation, and you are turning it into a psychic weather report. Leave it if you would rather interpret a mood than look at the picture. Mystery as a hiding place is still hiding.

The Moon, a face in the night

Sit with The Moon. Two towers. A dog and a wolf. A crayfish climbing from a pool. A path. Drops from a moon with a face. Traditional notes will talk about illusion, fear, the unconscious. Keep the useful bit. Then look.

Is this guidance, or undertow? Is the path a way through, or a way to wander? Are the animals loyal, wild, or both? The planet Moon names the flavour: inner weather, what is not yet day. The picture still has to say whether this is nourishing water or fog. Astrology did not finish the job.

Practice

Name the weather, not the spell

Open The Moon in the Tarot Library. Write: what is hidden, what is cycling, what is felt. Then pull one other card. Ask whether any lunar quality is actually there. If the second card is noon and practical, say so. Do not drag night onto it to feel deep.

Reflection

When you do not know, do you stay with the not-knowing, or do you invent a fog so you do not have to ask a plain question?
