Lesson 05

Meditation as practice

Settle attention. Notice thought. Return. Prepare for a reading.

Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.

Meditation, here, is awareness. Not a hobby of sitting still with a perfect spine. You can practise it making tea. You can practise it in a queue. You can practise it when a feeling hits you in the kitchen.

A sit is one option. A useful one. It's not the whole teaching, and it's not a test you can fail.

What we are training

Attention that can stay. Attention that can return when it wanders, which it will. Kindness toward the wander, then back to the kettle, or the feet, or the card.

That muscle is the same one you use when a story tries to hijack a spread. Notice. Return. Look again.

I'm not teaching you to become someone who lives on a cushion. I'm teaching you to be in the life you're already in, clearly enough to hear yourself. Stillness can help. So can washing up, if you're actually washing up.

Awareness in ordinary life

Making tea is meditation if you are actually making tea. Kettle. Mug. The wait. The pour. You are not solving your life in the steam. You are here for the length of a boil.

Walking: feel the feet. The street is not a corridor to the next worry. If the mind runs ahead, notice it, come back to the next step. That is the same muscle as a cushion, and you already have shoes.

A shower: water is an easy teacher. Feel the temperature. Feel the shoulders drop. You can let the last hour run off you without a speech. Or you can add a quiet intention. I am here. I am rinsing the day. I am arriving.

Waiting: a bus stop, a loading wheel, a queue at the shop. This isn't dead time. It's a chance to notice the body you brought. Feet. Breath. The bag on your shoulder. You don't need a forest.

Everyday tasks: folding, locking the door, cooking something simple. If you can be in the task, you can be in a reading. If you cannot, ten silent minutes will not magically give you a different mind. Start with the kettle.

Sitting quietly, and before sleep

You can sit without calling it meditation. Chair. Window. A few minutes with nothing to improve. That counts. So does lying down for one minute before sleep, lights down, feeling the bed, naming the day in three words and putting it down. That is closing, not a review meeting.

If you fall asleep, you needed sleep. That's not a failed sit. Go to bed like a person.

When a feeling arrives

Meditation is not only for calm days. When heat, grief, snap, or a sudden yes shows up, do not immediately make a plot. Where is it in the body. Tight, hollow, buzz, heavy, bright. Breathe toward it. You can still answer the email. Awareness is not a spa day.

Noticing the body is the practice. A clenched jaw. A held belly. Shoulders up by the ears. You come back to that the way you come back to the breath. Sensation is information. It is not automatically a message, and it is not a problem you have to solve before you are allowed to look at a card.

Before a reading, and after

Before you shuffle, this is the same practice with a deck in reach. Arrive. Name the question. Feel the chair. Look at something ordinary: a mug, a window, a shoe. Then pick up a card.

Meditation isn't a spiritual starter course you complete so you're allowed to shuffle. It's how you arrive so you can see. If you skip it, you'll drag the last hour onto the table and call it a message.

Afterwards, the same muscle closes the work. One minute. Feet. Room. The reading is finished. You are back in your own life. We will do more of that in protection and in opening and closing. The seed of it is here: return.

A simple sit, if you want one

If a sit helps you, here is a simple one. It is one door among many. You can grow it later. You can also skip it today and make tea with your whole attention. Both are the lesson.

Set a timer for three minutes. Not ten. Three.

Sit. Feet on the floor. Hands on your legs. Eyes closed, or soft on a point in the room.

Feel one breath arrive. Feel it leave. Do not improve it.

When a thought arrives, and it will, name it once, quietly: thinking. Then come back to the breath. Do not argue with the thought. Do not follow it into the kitchen.

If you meet restlessness, that is not failure. Restlessness is something you can observe. Come back.

If you meet a feeling, let it be in the body without making a plot. Come back.

When the timer ends, open your eyes. Name one ordinary object. You have arrived. Now you may pick up a card, or you may go and put the kettle on. Either is a return.

Activity

The door you will actually use

Pick one ordinary doorway for this week: tea, a walk, a shower, waiting, a task, a quiet sit, or the minute before sleep. Write how you will actually do it, in language you would say out loud. If it needs a perfect morning, it is too fancy. Keep it.

Practice

Ordinary awareness, then a card

Do one ordinary practice from this lesson. Tea, a short walk, a shower, or a task done with your actual attention. Then pull one card and write the first thing you receive. Do not edit it. Then write one line about whether the looking felt different. If it did not, write that too.

Open the practice

Practice

Three minutes, then a card

If a sit is your door today, do the simple sit with a timer. Then pull one card and write the first thing you receive. Do not edit it. Then write one line about how the sit changed the looking, or did not. Journal both. If the sit felt like a performance, say so, and try the kettle tomorrow instead.

Open the practice

Practice

Close down

After a reading or a practice, sit for one minute, or stand at the sink with the water running. Thank the table if that is true in your mouth. Feel your feet. Look at something ordinary in the room. Write one sentence about coming back. This is meditation as closing, not only as opening.

Open the practice

Reflection

Where does awareness actually arrive for you: the kettle, a walk, a shower, a sit, or nowhere yet? What pulled you away last time, and what would returning look like without making it a performance?
