A landscape that will not hurry. A figure on a tomb. A pause that is drawn. Ask: is this rest, freeze, or presence?
Why it matters
Readers who fear stillness will over-read every pause as stuck. Readers who romanticise it will miss a freeze.
How to recognise it
Composed hands, closed eyes, a seated spine, objects waiting, no wind. Four of Swords is a clean study. So is a court who will not leave the chair.
How to use it
Look at the face and the room. Stillness in a chapel is not stillness in a locked cellar. Neighbours change the quality. Choose two words, then interpret.
Light
Rest that restores. Presence. A true pause. Recovery. The dignity of not doing.
Shadow
Shutdown. Freeze. Hiding in the pause. Stillness as refusal to live. Numb as a spiritual look.
