Course/The Seventy-Eight Cards
Lesson 05
Swords
Observe first. Interpret second. Research third.
Swords. Air. Thought, communication, truth, conflict, decisions. The mind's blade, which can cut free or cut to pieces.
People fear this suit. Learn it. Air is how we tell the truth, and how we lie, and how we stay awake at three in the morning.
The field of air
When Swords dominate, the reading is in thought and speech. Decisions, arguments, anxiety, clarity, contracts, the story you tell yourself, the cut that has to be made. The traditional element is air. Recognise it: blades, clouds, wind, birds, high barren ground, figures who think, fight, sit sleepless, or rest after a battle.
Air moves and carries sound and cuts. A Sword can be a clean no. A Sword can be rumination that will not put the blade down. Do not treat the suit as bad luck. Treat it as mind. Then ask what this mind is doing.
How the story runs in Swords
The Ace is the clear blade, the idea, the truth that could free. Twos hold a blind balance. Threes pierce. Fours rest the mind, a needed pause. Fives win ugly. Sixes carry thought across water, a moving on. Sevens take, sneak, use strategy. Eights bind the mind. Nines torment it in the night. Tens show the end of a conflict story, the pile of blades, the thing that cannot be thought any further.
The courts are stances in air: first words, the pursuit of an idea, inward discernment, outward judgement. Queen of Swords and King of Swords are not a gendered pair. They are two ways of living the blade.

Three of Swords
Three
Three of Swords, again, now as a suit card
You have met this card as a traditional note, as a number, as an image. Now place it in its suit. It is not a Cups grief, though it can make you cry. It is air: a thought that has gone through a feeling, a word that has landed, three truths, a cut.
That is why it can appear in a work reading as three hard facts, and in a love reading as a spoken wound, and in a self reading as a mind that will not stop pressing where it hurts. Same suit. Same number. The question tunes it.
When you study the rest of Swords, keep asking: what is air doing here? Not: is this a nasty card.
Practice
Live in Swords
Open the Three of Swords, then the Eight, then the Ace. Wound in air, bind in air, seed of air. Write a line for each. Then take the Three into the Practice Room and ask a real question, even a small one. Let air answer.

Air in your week
Where is Sword energy in your actual week? A decision, a conversation you are avoiding, a thought that will not stop, a clarity you are proud of. Name the number it feels like.

Reflection
What were you taught about Swords that made you afraid of them? What would change if you treated air as a field of truth, not as a curse?
